Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich students win 2026 CSDA Debating Grand Final

An undefeated season has culminated in a major achievement for the Year 12 Debating team at Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich, with Charlotte Brailey, Demitra Hadjistravou, Harriet O’Connor and Alissa Tosh winning the 2026 Catholic Schools’ Debating Association (CSDA) Grand Final.

The CSDA is the largest secondary schools debating competition in the Southern Hemisphere, with more than 100 schools from across the Sydney region taking part each year.

With passionate speeches, quick-fire rebuttals and big ideas filling the room, the grand final saw the team tackle the thought-provoking proposition that “civic responsibilities require us to imagine lives beyond our own” – a challenge that demanded sharp thinking, strong teamwork and the ability to consider different perspectives.

“This win means so much to us as we have worked so hard as individuals and as a team to give our best every single week,” Charlotte said.

“It shows the strength of the group we’ve become and the way we’ve grown through the season. We’re proud of the result and proud of the way we earned it together.”

A team built on trust

Rachel Sampson, Principal at Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich said the “key turning point in the team’s run to the grand final was not a single moment, but the consistency and unity they demonstrated across every round.”

“Their ability to build on one another’s points, anticipate counter-arguments and maintain a cohesive line of reasoning ultimately set them apart.”

Having debated together since Year 7, the students have developed a strong understanding of each other’s strengths and the trust to work together under pressure.

Sydney Catholic Schools announces plans for new primary school in Rossmore

Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) has announced plans to establish a new Catholic primary school and Early Learning Centre at Rossmore, marking another significant investment in Catholic education across one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions.

The proposed school will provide families in Rossmore and the surrounding south-west Sydney growth corridor with access to high-quality Catholic education close to home.

The new school will initially open as a two-stream primary school with an Early Learning Centre, with a long-term masterplan allowing for future expansion as the local community grows.

The timeframe of the school will be confirmed as the project progresses through the necessary approvals, design and construction stages.

Executive Director Danielle Cronin said the proposal reflects SCS’ commitment to ensuring families have access to outstanding Catholic education where and when it is needed most.

“Across south-west Sydney, we’re seeing communities grow at an extraordinary pace, with more families choosing to make this region their home,” she said.

“Rossmore represents an investment not only in new facilities, but in the future of our communities who seek an exceptional Catholic education grounded in faith, excellence and service.”

A clear path into the classroom: ITE Scholarship applications open

A rewarding career in teaching starts with the right support.

Applications are now open for the 2026 Excellence in Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Scholarship, offering outstanding aspiring teachers financial assistance, personalised mentoring and a pathway into a Sydney Catholic Schools classroom.

Kai Straub and Sienna Rossi both completed the scholarship and now teach at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Primary School, Mt Pritchard.

In addition to receiving a financial benefit of $5,000 per year for the final two years of their degree, they received personalised mentoring by experienced teachers and opportunities to connect with fellow scholarship recipients and educators across Sydney Catholic Schools.

That support gave them the confidence to transition from university into their own classrooms.

For Kai, having a knowledgeable and skilled mentor on site made the shift from student to full-time teacher far less daunting.

“It’s been really cool to have a mentor here because they know what the experience is like and they know what the parents are like,” he says. “Just to have someone on site, someone to go to, has been really beneficial.”

Working as a Learning Support Officer at the same school where he now teaches gave Kai a head start most graduates don’t get: he was already familiar with the students, staff and school community before he stepped into his own classroom.

Balancing that part-time role with university and professional placements was demanding, but it taught him the organisation and resilience that now underpin his teaching.

“It was challenging. I was working part time while also studying, so it was really about being organised,” he says. “I think that kind of built me up for what …

Sydney Catholic Schools unveils new look inspired by faith, tradition and a vision for the future

Sydney Catholic Schools has unveiled its new visual identity inspired by the Southern Rose Window of St Mary’s Cathedral, shifting the visual focus from Sydney’s iconic landmarks to the spiritual heart of the Archdiocese.

The new symbol unifies the system’s 147 schools that stretch across Greater Sydney from Bondi to Bonnyrigg and Eastwood to Engadine, bringing together the richness of the Catholic tradition with a commitment to forming young people who are equipped to live lives of purpose, faith and hope.

Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools Danielle Cronin said the logo provides a stronger expression of the mission connecting the organisation’s schools.

“For many years, Sydney Harbour and its landmarks have provided a familiar visual shorthand for our city, but they represent only one small part of the Sydney we serve,” Ms Cronin said.

“What unites our diverse communities across the Sydney Archdiocese is not a harbour or a postcode, but a shared Catholic faith and mission. By drawing inspiration from St Mary’s Cathedral, our new logo places that mission at our core.”

Drawing on the symbolism of the rose window, the logo places Christ at the centre and unites our vibrant and diverse school communities in a shared Catholic identity. Its form expresses our pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty, while giving visual expression to wonder, wisdom and witness, the values at the heart of Magis 2033.

Minister Jason Clare visit sees SCS student learning and teacher pathways in action

Student achievement, innovative learning and new pathways into teaching were in focus during Federal Minister for Education the Hon Jason Clare MP’s visit to two Sydney Catholic schools.

The Minister visited St Luke’s Catholic Primary School Revesby and St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School Mortlake meeting with students, teachers and school leaders.

At St Luke’s, Mr Clare was joined by Federal Member for Banks Zhi Soon MP and Local Member for East Hills Kylie Wilkinson MP.

The visit highlighted St Luke’s focus on building strong literacy foundations while giving students opportunities to discover their strengths and build confidence. Students also demonstrated their involvement in the Amadeus Music Education Program, which provides classroom music lessons, specialist tuition and ensemble experiences for students in Years 3–8 across Sydney Catholic Schools.

‘It’s particularly good to see kids learning to read and write and count and all of the evidence-based teaching that we know works to teach kids to learn to read phonics,” Mr Clare said.

“We got to see it here in action at the school and also small group tutoring. So if your child is falling behind in the classroom, you get into a group with 3-4 other kids and you can learn as much in 6 months as you’d normally learn in 12 months. It’s working right here at St Luke’s and we want to roll it out across the country.”

Later that day, Jason Clare and Federal Member for Reid, Sally Sitou visited St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School Mortlake, where they toured the school’s modern learning facilities and saw how students are supported through a broad range of innovative educational opportunities.

The Minister also heard about Sydney Catholic Schools’ teacher pathway, supporting future educators from secondary school, through university and into the classroom.

St Mary’s Cathedral Choir tours Europe’s greatest cathedrals

From the heart of Vatican City to some of Great Britain’s most breathtaking cathedrals and churches, students from St Mary’s Cathedral Choir have delivered a series of remarkable performances during an unforgettable international tour showcasing the beauty and tradition of sacred choral music.

The tour began in Rome, where Australia’s oldest musical ensemble arrived to sing Mass at one of the Catholic Church’s most sacred and significant sites, St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring the talent of St Mary’s Cathedral Choir Sydney to two of the world’s most renowned basilicas, and the Church’s Australian home in Rome,” said Kerrie McDiarmid, Principal of St Mary’s Cathedral College.

“These are venues that many musicians only dream about singing in, and our students have had the opportunity to fill these spaces with their voices. It’s hard to match the experience of singing in the Vatican. Seeing our students walk into the Basilica and perform in such a magnificent place was a truly special opportunity.”

The Choir then performed a Mass and a concert at the awe-inspiring Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls, one of Rome’s four major papal basilicas, marking an extraordinary beginning to an unforgettable international tour.

The choir’s time in Rome concluded with the privilege of attending Mass celebrated by Pope Leo XIV on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. Students also visited the magnificent Sistine Chapel and Colosseum, gaining a deeper appreciation of the city’s rich history and heritage.

From Rome, the choir travelled to Scotland, where choristers sang Mass at St Mary’s Catholic Cathedral Edinburgh before performing a concert for a warm and appreciative audience.

Holy Spirit Lakemba hosts Careers Enrichment Day with NSW Premier

Futures were ignited at Holy Spirit Catholic College as the NSW Premier Chris Minns joined Year 10–12 students for the College’s flagship Careers Enrichment Day: Igniting Paths, Empowering Futures.

The event brought together more than 60 exhibitors representing universities, TAFE, apprenticeships, local businesses, government agencies and industry organisations, alongside the Minister for Industrial Relations, Sophie Cotsis.

Mr Minns, himself a Sydney Catholic Schools alumna, spoke to Year 12 students about resilience, opportunity and the importance of effort.

“The decisions you make now can shape your future, but they don’t define the limits of what you can become. Approach your exams with confidence, back your ability, and trust that hard work and persistence will carry you further than you expect,” the Premier said.

He also encouraged students to use the Expo as a space for exploration and discovery.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to speak to a number of stalls, spark an idea, and maybe that’s where you can see yourself in five years’ time,” he said.

Students rotated through immersive workshops, participating in sessions on mental health and resilience, university entry pathways, opportunities for Sydney Catholic Schools teaching scholarships and alumni-led discussions focused on identity, values and future decision-making.

The program also featured TED Talk-style presentations by Crazy Ideas College, a social enterprise that encourages students to think critically about identity, wellbeing and future aspirations.

Principal Kevin Griffiths said the day was a powerful reminder of what happens when you bring education and industry together.

“Our students are not just hearing about pathways, they are speaking directly with the people living them. That exposure is invaluable in helping them understand what is possible,” he said.

Teaching excellence drives student growth at St Paul of the Cross Dulwich Hill

St Paul of the Cross Catholic Primary School Dulwich Hill has been ranked second in NSW for overall student growth averages among schools in the top ICSEA quartile, according to an independent analysis of 2025 NAPLAN data published by the Sydney Morning Herald.

At the centre of the school’s improvement is a unique concentration of teaching expertise.

Approximately 40 per cent of teaching staff are pursuing or have achieved Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher (HALT) accreditation through NESA, a level of professional commitment rarely seen in a primary school setting.

For Principal Brooke Watson, the recognition reflects a sustained whole-school commitment to improving outcomes for every student.

“I’m most proud that these results reflect the growth of every child, not just a select few. Our staff have worked incredibly hard to build consistent, evidence-informed teaching practices while never losing sight of each student’s individual needs,” Ms Watson said.

“We use data deeply to understand exactly where each child needs support and challenge,” Ms Watson said.

The school currently has three accredited Lead Teachers, while a further three applications are awaiting final outcomes from NESA. Additional staff have expressed interest in commencing the process.

The school has also implemented the Newman Selective Gifted Education Program which has driven further professional development and contributed to the growth in results.

Consequently, Kindergarten enrolments have grown from 11 students in 2022 to 53 students already enrolled for 2027, reflecting the confidence families place in the school’s approach.

Parent Emily Maguire moved her son to St Paul of the Cross after struggling to find a setting that could meet her son’s learning needs.

Initially drawn by the school’s student growth results, the family ultimately chose it for its personalised approach, strong communication and commitment to knowing each child as an individual.

“We had almost given up hope of finding somewhere that got the balance right,” Ms Maguire said.

“St Paul of the Cross changed that.”

Despite the recognition, Principal Brooke Watson said the school’s focus remains firmly on what comes next.

Surfing for her mob, caring for her community

As National Reconciliation Week draws to a close, St Aloysius College Cronulla student Matilda Thearle has made history as the first Allied Health school-based Aboriginal trainee at Sydney Local Health District.

The Year 12 student is completing a Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance through placements at Balmain Hospital and Forest Lodge Child and Family Health Centre, gaining hands-on experience across a range of health disciplines.

The traineeship has seen Matilda named a finalist in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year category at the 2026 NSW Training Awards, with winners announced on 4 June.

“It’s just so rewarding to be able to help patients get back to doing daily activities and to see them gain confidence,” Matilda said. “My plan is to continue doing Allied Health Assistance as a job when I finish school.”

A proud Badjiri woman whose family ties trace back to Cunnamulla in south-west Queensland, Matilda also travelled to Victoria last weekend to compete at the Australian Indigenous Surf Titles at Bells Beach, placing fourth in the Open Women’s division.

“I feel really proud that I can represent at such a high level, not only as an athlete but also as a proud young Aboriginal woman,” she said.

For Matilda, Indigenous sporting events are about far more than competition. Through them she has built friendships, strengthened her connection to culture and gained a deeper understanding of Aboriginal communities across Australia.

Participating in smoking ceremonies before competitions connects her to the land and waterways where she surfs.

Away from competition, she also coaches surfers of all ages at Cronulla Surfing Academy.

Something wicked this way comes: Sydney students premiere original Shakespearean musical in landmark artistic collaboration

Freedom is months away. One Shakespeare unit stands between Year 12 and the rest of their lives. And the teacher covering the class? A PE sub who absolutely did not sign up for this.

This was the premise of The Shakespeare Project — a wholly original musical devised by 28 students from 13 Sydney Catholic Schools alongside Australia’s foremost Shakespearean theatre company Bell Shakespeare. The production held in May at The Space Theatre, NIDA was also staged with full production support from National Institute for Dramatic Arts third-year students.

Bell Shakespeare worked with the Sydney Catholic School students in a series of workshops to give students a practical experience and training with Shakespeare’s language, focused on a performance approach to Shakespeare’s language, characters and stories.

Bell Shakespeare’s Head of Education and an award-winning playwright Joanna Erskine wrote two original scenes as part of the project, to be performed alongside other new scenes and student work.

“It’s been wonderful to work with Sydney Catholic Schools because of the vast spread and diversity of the schools involved,” she said.

“It is rare to work with so many schools from across Sydney within one project. It’s been a thrilling and creative way to work with schools for the first time, and support students with their Shakespeare engagement.”

Bell Shakespeare teaching artists Tom Matthews, James Thomassen, and Shelley Casey directed the Bell Shakespeare scenes and supported the project through rehearsals and tech.

Future teachers start here: Applications open for SCS Teacher Scholarships

The search for the next generation of Catholic educators has begun, with Sydney Catholic Schools opening applications for its 2026 Teacher Scholarship Programs.

Eligible Year 12 students can now apply for one of two pathways into a rewarding career in Catholic education, with up to $22,000 in financial support, dedicated mentoring, and hands-on classroom experience while they study.

Hanna Saliba knows first-hand what a difference it can make. Now in his second year of a Bachelor of Education at ACU Strathfield, the Aquinas Catholic College Menai graduate is studying to become a Secondary teacher.

He says the Future Teacher Scholarship has shaped his university experience in ways he didn’t anticipate.

“I’ve made heaps of friends from it. A lot of the friends I hang out with at uni are the ones I met from the scholarship,” he says.

“That support and connections has even taken me back to Aquinas Menai where I now work as a Learning Support Officer.

Hanna says the placement and the pathway support provided by the scholarship has given him the hands-on experience needed to propel his career.

“As much as we’re in schools to teach kids what’s in the curriculum, we also have to develop them as a whole person, to prepare them for the real world. Whether that’s trying their best or respecting others, having that faith behind you brings a lot of purpose into it.”

Now in its fifth year, the SCS Portrait Prize serves as a powerful platform to recognise and celebrate outstanding Visual Arts students, setting a high standard of excellence for emerging talent across K–12. This year, 93 outstanding works from across 40 Sydney Catholic Schools have been selected to be showcased at the McGlade Gallery, Australian Catholic University Strathfield from 10-19 December 2026.

A full-circle moment for Sydney Catholic Schools’ HSC SHAPE showcase

On the wall of Freeman Catholic College Bonnyrigg Heights, a timber model of Wall-E stands quietly on display. It has been there for years — a relic of one student’s ambition, now watching over a new generation finding theirs.

That model was built by Alessandrio Lettieri in 2016, a former Freeman student whose HSC major work was selected for SHAPE, the NSW Education Standards Authority’s prestigious annual showcase of the state’s most outstanding student design projects.

Today, Mr Lettieri walks those same corridors as an Industrial Technology teacher. And this year, one of his own students followed in his footsteps.

“Seeing one of my first Year 12 students selected for SHAPE was incredibly special,” he said.

“It wasn’t just pride in their work. It was the realisation that their creativity, persistence, and craftsmanship had been recognised at the highest level.”

Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) made a remarkable impression at SHAPE 2026, with five students across four schools selected to feature in this year’s showcase.

Of just 57 students chosen from more than 11,000 entries across NSW, nearly one in ten called an SCS school home. Freeman College led the cohort with two selections, and the stories behind both projects are as compelling as the works themselves.

Pyper Paszyn, a Year 12 student in Mr Lettieri’s very first HSC timber class, created a standing tambour jewellery cabinet, its sliding door adorned with an intricate marquetry inlay of kookaburras and eucalyptus trees inspired by her love of native Australian fauna and flora.

Sydney Catholic Schools teacher honoured for Gifted Education excellence

A passion for helping gifted students reach their full potential has led St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School Marsfield teacher Lauren Marnezos to one of the University of New South Wales (UNSW)’s highest academic honours.

Lauren has been named on the 2025 Dean’s List for her outstanding results in the Graduate Certificate in High Potential and Gifted Education.

Lauren’s interest in high potential and gifted education was ignited early in her teaching career, where she realised that gifted students require deliberate, thoughtful differentiation to truly thrive, and that their learning needs are not always immediately visible.

“While teachers are often very aware of students who may need additional support, high potential learners can be overlooked or assumed to be ‘doing fine’ on their own,” Lauren explains.

“I wanted to deepen my understanding of how to identify and nurture these students’ abilities, while also supporting their emotional and social development.”

Being named on the Dean’s List at UNSW is a recognition Lauren describes as both humbling and motivating.

“More than anything, it affirmed how passionate I am about continuing to grow as an educator,” she says.

Lauren plans to continue developing her own research into the influence of teacher attitudes on the learning experiences of gifted students.

“The gifted child may not always stand out, and it is our job as educators to dig deeper and look beyond surface achievement to uncover their true potential,” she says.

The recognition has also opened the door to further research. With guidance from a university supervisor, Lauren will now start to explore how professional learning can help teachers better understand and support gifted students in their classrooms.

Global experts explore Sydney Catholic Schools

A visit from the leadership team at Boston College’s Roche Center for Catholic Education highlighted how Sydney Catholic Schools is bringing its vision for whole-person formation to life across its school communities.

On Wednesday, the Roche Center’s Executive Director Dr. Melodie Wyttenbach and Director of Leadership Programs, Dr. Molly McMahon spent time engaging with school leaders, teachers and students at St Anthony of Padua Catholic College Austral, Eileen O’Connor Catholic College Lewisham, and St Mary’s Cathedral College Sydney.

The scholars explored how Catholic education in Sydney supports students’ formation within a contemporary Australian context.

Danielle Cronin, Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools, said that this week is dedicated to faith formation and professional collaboration.

“These visits highlight how Sydney Catholic Schools forms confident and courageous young adults ready to contribute to society. 2026 CEF Teaching Scholarship recipients welcomed into SCS community

Sydney Catholic Schools has announced the 2026 recipients of the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) Teaching Scholarship, with record application numbers highlighting strong interest in teaching within Catholic schools.

Following a competitive selection process, 16 students were awarded scholarships for 2026, recognised for their academic potential, commitment to Catholic service, and passion for teaching.

For 2026 recipient Angelina Odisho, an 18-year-old former student of Freeman Catholic College Bonnyrigg Heights, receiving the scholarship represents both reassurance and opportunity as she begins her university journey.

“I am immensely grateful to have received the CEF Teaching Scholarship for 2026, as it allows me to gain a head start on my career in education knowing that I am supported not only financially, but also holistically throughout my journey to becoming an educator,” she said.

CEF Supervisor Kathleen Badolato said early support, mentoring and belonging underscores the important role the scholarship plays in forming confident, values-led educators.

“For these students, receiving this scholarship signifies an entry into a lifelong ecosystem of support. It provides them with a rare bridge between their academic studies and their professional vocation, allowing them to deepen their faith journey within the Sydney Catholic Schools community even as they master their craft at a Catholic university,” she said.

Angelina echoed the importance of this support network, noting that the scholarship eases the pressures often associated with university life.

St Kevin’s Eastwood leads with heart for World Kindness Day

As Sydney Catholic Schools celebrate World Kindness Day, St Kevin’s Catholic Primary School Eastwood has marked the occasion in a joyful and moving fashion, becoming the first school in Australia to launch the My Acts of Kindness (MAOK) Schools Program.

Principal Maree Simpson, said the launch this week was the culmination of months of preparation, and a shared desire to nurture children to live out the Gospel message in their everyday lives.

“We hope our students come to know that simple acts of kindness can have an enormous impact,” Maree said.

“It’s about empowering children to lead with heart, act with courage and to show their families and communities what it looks like to live our faith in small, loving ways.”

On Monday, the school began its celebrations of the MAOK partnership with prayer, grounding the day in Scripture: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” – Ephesians 4:32

This message shaped a series of activities across the school, from classroom reflections and outdoor kindness games, to student interviews and creative tasks. Students also performed the newly created Kindness Anthem and shared ‘kindness characters’, developed by Year 6 students earlier this year.

Celebrating a lifetime of faith and teaching on World Teachers’ Day

For more than five decades, Villa Maria Catholic Primary School Hunters Hill has been at the heart of Marea De Angelis’ life.

This World Teachers’ Day, Sydney Catholic Schools celebrates and honours her extraordinary journey – a lifetime devoted to teaching, community, and faith.

From her first days as a student, to returning as a parent, teacher and now Family Educator, Marea’s story is woven through the very fabric of Villa Maria.

“Villa Maria is truly the anchor of my life,” she says.

“It’s not just a school, it’s the very heart of our parish family here in Hunters Hill. Having been connected in so many ways, I’ve witnessed generations grow up in its embrace.”

Her connection to God and family runs through every part of her life. Marea and her husband David were married just down the road at Holy Name of Mary Church, where she also received her sacraments.

Their four children later grew up in the same community, and her parents’ devotion to Catholic values inspired her lifelong dedication to giving back.

National Skills Week – Growing future educators through SBES Traineeships

Sydney Catholic Schools is investing in its classrooms of today to grow the teachers of tomorrow, with the School-Based Education Support (SBES) Traineeship placing senior students in real school settings while they complete their HSC.

This program allows students to learn while they earn, gaining hands-on experience supporting students in real classrooms and achieving a Certificate III in School-Based Education Support in the process.

Since its launch two years ago, 13 Year 11 and 12 students are now participating in the Grow Your Own program, working across 12 primary schools in the Sydney Catholic Schools network.

At the heart of the program is the vision of nurturing current students who may one day join the Sydney Catholic Schools community as Educators and Learning Support Officers.

Graduates from the pilot program have already moved into active, casual employment within Sydney Catholic Schools while continuing their tertiary studies, and participation is set to grow further with future intakes.

The traineeship not only develops practical skills but also nurtures confidence, teamwork, and a passion for education. It is a unique opportunity for students to make a meaningful contribution to their school community while exploring future career pathways, perfectly showcasing the value of skills development during National Skills Week.

Lillie, a current trainee at St Andrew’s Catholic Primary School Malabar, said the traineeship had helped her grow in confidence, as well as develop greater respect for her own teachers and their work.

Innovation meets heritage as St Clare’s Waverley launches Lumos Centre

St Clare’s College Waverley has officially opened The Lumos Centre, a contemporary learning hub housed within the beautifully restored heritage-listed former Waverley Post Office in Sydney’s east.

On Wednesday, 20 August, the space was blessed by Most Rev Terence John Gerard Brady and officially opened by Principal Ann Freeman.

The ceremony was attended by staff, students and local dignitaries, including Sister Louise Hume (a former student and Principal of St Clare’s), Member for Coogee Dr Marjorie O’Neill MP, and Waverley Council Deputy Mayor Keri Spooner. It also included the unveiling of a plaque by Bishop Brady and Dr O’Neill.

“We are deeply grateful to all who contributed to the creation of this space, dedicated staff, architects, builders and the wider school community,” Ms Freeman said.

“This building stands as a testament to vision, commitment and faith.”

Southern Cross Catholic College named Australia’s best non-government secondary school

Southern Cross Catholic College in Burwood has been crowned Secondary School of the Year (Non-Government) at the 2025 Australian Education Awards held on 8 August in Sydney.

St Columba’s Catholic Primary School Leichhardt North teacher Pember Schubert has been named one of Australia’s Best Teachers in a national series by The Daily Telegraph.

Pember is widely known in her school community for transforming her classroom into a dynamic, joy-filled space where students are encouraged to wonder, explore and engage.

From recreating Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory to embracing the chaos of Dr Seuss’ Wacky Wednesday, she finds playful ways to immerse students in learning.

Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) celebrates its 2025 NAPLAN results, with students performing significantly above State and national averages.

Danielle Cronin, Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools said the gains reflect the commitment to improving teaching quality through ongoing professional learning, systematic assessment practices, and targeted intervention strategies.

“Sydney Catholic Schools’ approach is underpinned by high impact teaching practices, including explicit instruction, modelling, guided practice, and continuous formative assessment,” Ms Cronin said.

“Our schools are continuing to foster academic excellence by ensuring that every student’s needs are known and teachers are equipped to use a range of evidence-based practices to ensure that every learner is succeeding, regardless of their background.”

While national NAPLAN results show varied outcomes, the Sydney Catholic Schools network stands out for its targeted approach to supporting students, particularly in low socio-economic communities.

At St Therese Catholic Primary School Miller where 83% of students come from a language background other than English, Year 5 students demonstrated growth across all five NAPLAN domains, with standout improvements in spelling (+18.64%) and numeracy (+17.5%).

In addition, Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School in Villawood and St Catherine of Siena Catholic Primary School in Prestons achieved a strong proficiency growth across the board.

Three Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) students have proudly represented Australia on the international stage as members of the Subway Joeys U16 national football team.

Corey Da Cruz (De La Salle College Revesby Heights), Georgio Hassarati (Marist College Eastwood) and Aston Reid (St Patrick’s College Sutherland) earned selection for the Joeys squad, competing at the Chinese Football Association (CFA) U16 International Tournament in Hohhot, China, from 28 May to 2 June 2025.

Australia finished runners-up to the host nation, with the tournament featuring elite youth teams from China, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam. After opening the competition with a 2–1 win against both Vietnam and Saudi Arabia, the Subway Joeys were defeated 5–2 by China in a high-intensity final fixture in front of 17,000 fans.

From lunchtime games to international pitches

For Corey Da Cruz, the moment he found out he’d been selected was one of excitement, disbelief, and a quick phone call home.

Jo Thompson, Network Hub Lead at SCS, says the scholarship isn’t just about attracting future teachers, it’s about setting them up to thrive long-term.

“The financial support alleviates pressures for our candidates, so they can focus on learning during this critical period,” Jo said.

On Thursday, 13 March, Sydney Catholic Schools gathered at St Mary’s Cathedral for the 2025 Commissioning Mass.

This significant event celebrated the commissioning of beginning teachers, school leaders, and our new Executive Director, Danielle Cronin. The annual Mass is a time of reflection, renewal, and unity, reaffirming our shared commitment to Catholic education.

Presiding over the Mass, Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP spoke about the significance of the occasion in shaping the hearts and minds of young people:

“In celebrating the Eucharist to mark these new beginnings, we are reminded of the invaluable role Catholic educators play in forming the character, and spirit of our young people, leading them to God along the path of discipleship,” Archbishop Fisher said.

Honouring a legacy: Sisters of St Joseph of Orange visit Sydney Catholic Schools

More than 70 years ago, a small group of Sisters journeyed from California to Sydney, bringing with them a deep commitment to education, faith, and service.

The Sisters of St Joseph of Orange devoted decades to shaping the communities of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School Miranda, and St Catherine Labouré Catholic Primary School Gymea, leaving behind a lasting impact.

This year, their story came full circle as representatives from the congregation returned to the schools they once nurtured. More than a reunion, their visit was a powerful reminder of how faith and service ripple across generations, shaping schools, families, and communities.

To honour this heritage, the visiting Sisters presented each school with a generous gift, reinforcing their commitment to Catholic education and ensuring their contribution continues to support future generations across both schools.

Sister Mary Beth Ingham reflected on the significance of the visit, saying:

“In 2021, the last of our Sisters in Australia, Sister Gemma Crowe, entered eternal life. Though we are no longer physically present here, our legacy of love remains in the hearts of those we served.

A new era has begun at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic College Burraneer as the school proudly celebrates its first-ever Year 12 cohort in 2025.

Breaking barriers: Liam’s path to success with the CEF

For Liam*, completing high school was more than an academic milestone; it was a victory against overwhelming odds.

Thanks to the support of the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF), Liam was able to rise above personal challenges and thrive at Patrician Brothers’ College Fairfield.

Liam’s story began with upheaval. Before starting high school, he and his younger brother returned to Sydney from Cairns after experiencing domestic violence at home.

Their grandmother stepped in, providing a safe haven, taking on the financial strain of their education, and delaying her retirement. Despite his grandmother’s dedication, the mounting costs of school fees and the emotional toll of family difficulties became too much to bear.

In 2021, Liam’s wellbeing coordinator, Mrs D’Amico, stepped in to help. Recognising the family’s challenges, she introduced them to the CEF, which provided a bursary that lifted the financial burden and allowed him to remain at Patrician Brothers’ College.

“The CEF and Mrs D’Amico’s support made all the difference,” Liam said. “It eased the pressure on my grandmother and let me focus on my education instead of worrying about how we’d manage.”

The CEF’s assistance extended far beyond finances. With the stability it offered, Liam embraced opportunities for personal and academic growth. Leadership roles such as becoming a Senior Prefect, helped him develop resilience, confidence, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP’s Christmas message 2024

In the Middle Ages, after a period of prolonged suffering from climate change, war and pandemic, thousands of Christians went on pilgrimage to Rome at Christmas time to celebrate the birth of Jesus and the hope He brings.

But not everyone could make the journey to Rome. So popes began the practice of granting jubilee indulgences both to those who made the trek and those who stayed home but engaged in some other designated penance and celebration.

So began the practice of the periodic ‘Holy’ Year, celebrated on the jubilee of the Lord’s birth, at first every century, then every half-century, and nowadays every twenty-five years.

The jubilee idea goes back to ancient Israel. Certain years were marked by forgiveness of debts, freeing of slaves, and resting the land. It signalled hope for new beginnings.

This Christmas Eve Pope Francis will open Jubilee 2025: a year of prayer and pilgrimage, forgiveness and fraternity, joy and hope.

Its theme is Pilgrims in Hope.

Just as choirs of angels broke through that most silent of nights by singing the joy of Christ’s birth; just as a star pierced through the darkest of night to proclaim that the Messiah had come; just as wise kings and gentle shepherds gathered in contrast to cruel and grasping ones, so in each generation the joy of jubilee breaks through the trials of the day.

We are given a new beginning and hope for more and better.

Former refugee Asteer tops state in Arabic Extension

Mary MacKillop Catholic College Wakeley student Asteer has reached an impressive milestone, placing first in the state for Arabic Extension in the 2024 HSC and achieving an ATAR of 95.15.

This triumph symbolises years of hard work and overcoming adversity, with Asteer’s story beginning far from her Sydney classroom.

Born in war-torn Iraq, Asteer’s education was disrupted for seven years. Her family later migrated to Australia as refugees, facing immense challenges, including cultural adjustment, language barriers, and the emotional toll of starting over.

In conjunction with the hard work of staff at Mary Mackillop Catholic College and through the guidance, generosity and support of the City Link Mentor Program, Asteer transformed obstacles into opportunities.

As part of the program a dedicated mentor and businessman has supported her journey since Year 9.

Mentors in the City Link Mentor Program contribute $5,000 per year per student, meeting with them at least four times annually.

Over the years, Asteer’s mentor has invested into her education and played a pivotal role in her growth. His decision to continue mentoring two additional students next year exemplifies the profound impact of the program.

“The City Link Mentor Program wasn’t just financial support, it gave me hope and reminded me to believe in myself,” Asteer shared. “It allowed me to focus on catching up on my education and rebuilding my future without the constant stress of financial burdens.”

From refugee to role model: CEF helps Sarah thrive

Sarah’s story reflects the determination and resilience of many young people seeking a fresh start, culminating in her impressive achievement of an ATAR of 97 in the 2024 HSC.

After arriving in Australia as a refugee, Sarah’s journey from adapting to a new education system to excelling in her HSC at Mary MacKillop Catholic College was made possible with the support of the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF).

Originally from war-torn Iraq, Sarah and her family lived in Jordan before resettling in Australia. Adjusting to a new environment came with challenges, as her family focused on priorities like securing housing, employment, and stability.

“My access to educational resources was limited, but the CEF gave me greater opportunities in education that I wouldn’t have been able to afford otherwise,” Sarah explains.

The CEF bursary provided more than just financial relief. It gave Sarah the confidence to embrace her education fully. “Receiving the bursary showed me that people believed in my potential,” she says. “It inspired me to work hard, give back to my community, and help others who face similar challenges.”

Against the backdrop of Australia’s escalating cost-of-living crisis, Southern Cross Catholic College Burwood and Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) are addressing a pressing question: how can educators prepare young Australians for an increasingly complex financial future?

Christmas is a time of giving and celebrates the ultimate present – God’s gift of his perfect son. As we enter a season fixated on presents, treats and material gifts it is a good time to revisit the joy that can be found by integrating simple acts of kindness into Christmas celebrations in a way that is both enjoyable and impactful.

At Sydney Catholic Schools, we know teaching children to care about others doesn’t have to be complicated, especially at this time of giving and compassion. Diane is particularly proud of her role in developing professional learning plans for staff and witnessing their successful implementation in the classroom, ultimately reflected in student individualised achievements.

From Iraq to Australia: two sisters’ tale of embracing resilience and finding their dreams

Helen recalls tearing up on her first day of school in Australia, feeling overwhelmed by not knowing how to communicate.

Born and raised in Iraq, the former Sydney Catholic Schools student and her sister Nadeen had a tumultuous start to life, constantly facing the looming threat of persecution from militant groups.

In a country where Catholics make up less than one percent of the population, the sisters and their parents relocated to Australia via Lebanon, seeking better opportunities, a higher quality of life and the freedom to practice their faith in peace.

In 2020, fate led them to Sydney Catholic Schools’ Catholic Education Foundation (CEF), and their academic future quickly became one of optimism, brimming with newfound potential and opportunities.

The CEF supports a number of refugee students via bursaries across 39 Sydney Catholic Schools, easing financial burdens and supporting families academically, emotionally, and spiritually.

“The opportunity to study in a Sydney Catholic School was one of our parents’ main goals. Catholic values align perfectly with who we are as a family. Without the CEF’s support, our parents wouldn’t have been able to afford to enrol us at our dream school, and it gave them significant peace of mind,” Nadeen said.

Starting high school in Year 10 and Year 11, when most students already have established friendships, took significant courage. Additionally, the pressure to perform well academically was immense.

“I struggled with understanding the accent and often joked about needing subtitles. However, through the CEF’s support, intensive English programs and a nurturing school community, we overcame these obstacles,” Helen said.

Helen and Nadeen truly returned their parents’ persistence and dedication in ensuring their daughters had every opportunity available to them during their academic journeys and beyond.

2024 Eisteddfod: the results are in

Pablo Picasso once said, “Art washes away from the soul the dust from everyday life.”

The creativity of young people has a singular expressive power, bringing their energy and unique perspective forward to inspire people of all ages, serving as a mirror to our emotions, aspirations and shared experiences.

This year’s Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) Eisteddfod was a shining example of these vibrant expressions, an encore-worthy event, featuring the dance, music and vocal performances from our dynamic creative arts program offered throughout our 147 primary and secondary schools.

While the curtain has officially fallen on this year’s Eisteddfod—with 8,500 students and 125 schools taking part in show-stopping solo and ensemble performances across 23 days—it will not quickly be forgotten.

The event continues to hit all the right notes, enabling more students and schools to access competition with feedback provided from industry professionals who adjudicate performances.

Performance categories included Drama, Dance, Instrumental and Vocal, showcasing the incredible breadth of talent and dedication among our students. Points were awarded for each place, certificate and participation.

St John Bosco Catholic Primary School Engadine were crowned the winners for the very first time, after receiving the most points over the course of the nine weeks.

St Vincent’s College Ashfield took 1st Runner Up, while Mount St Joseph Catholic College Milperra came in 2nd Runner Up.

A selection of the best and brightest acts from this year’s Eisteddfod were also invited back to perform at the Eisteddfod Showcase which was held at Marist College Eastwood.

Empowering refugee students through a Catholic education

It’s a typical Monday morning at All Saints Catholic College Liverpool in south-west Sydney, one of the largest and most vibrant Catholic schools in Australia. As students gather around lockers and corridors, preparing for another day of learning, the school resonates with a vibrant energy that sets it apart.

Underpinning this commitment to supporting refugee students, is Sydney Catholic Schools’ Catholic Education Foundation (CEF).

The CEF’s Refugee Bursary ensures all children, regardless of their circumstances, have access to a quality Catholic education. It offers crucial support to families who’ve fled their countries of origin to seek safety, peace and opportunity in Australia.

A former refugee student returns as a staff member to pay it forward

Former student, Nancy, had only just turned six when war broke out in Syria.

“We were living a normal life until the war started, then things started to deteriorate and get bad. By the end of 2016, it was a threat to our lives to stay there. There was no electricity, we had to find a solution,” Nancy said.

Honouring their service and sacrifice: SCS commemorates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veterans

In 1942, Leonard ‘Len’ Waters, a proud Kamilaroi (Gamilaraay) man, found himself at the crossroads of history as Japan entered World War II, with the threat of invasion looming ever closer to Australian shores.

Responding to the urgent call of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) for recruits, Waters and his brother, Jim, volunteered for service at No. 3 Recruiting Centre in Brisbane in August 1942.

Undeterred by his limited formal education, Waters began training as a pilot in 1943, determined to prove himself. By July 1944, his hard work paid off as he received his RAAF pilot’s wings and was promoted to sergeant, becoming Australia’s first-ever Indigenous fighter pilot.

Waters flew an impressive 95 missions in his Kittyhawk, Black Magic, logging 103 flying hours. After the war, he left the Air Force, married his fiancée, and returned to shearing, never to fly again.

In a heartfelt tribute to the bravery of individuals like Waters, students from across Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) gathered at the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park to honour the service and sacrifice of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veterans.

Through our Goodjarga Aboriginal and Torres Strait Performing Arts program, more than 50 Aboriginal students from six schools represented SCS, delivering a moving rendition of the National Anthem in both Dharawal and English.

A further six students from St Mary’s Cathedral College Sydney embraced the prestigious role of flag bearers for the ceremony, selected for their outstanding dedication and leadership within their school community.

This year, 18 Sydney Catholic Schools attended the ceremony, each laying a beautiful wreath at the Hyde Park Pool of Reflection to honour the service of First Nations’ men and women, both past and present.
