Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) is celebrating the achievements of two outstanding schools – St Mary’s Cathedral College Sydney and Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich – for their remarkable contributions to education in 2024.
Both schools have been recognised in The Educator’s 5-Star Innovative Schools 2024 awards for their pioneering teaching approaches that prioritise student success and well-being.
St Mary’s Cathedral College Sydney
St Mary’s Cathedral College, a co-educational K–12 school located in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, has earned widespread recognition for its transformative educational model.
Under the leadership of Principal Kerrie McDiarmid, the College has redefined teaching and learning by integrating critical thinking, student efficacy, and real-world experiences.
A core tenet of St Mary’s educational philosophy is student efficacy – the belief that how students perceive themselves and their futures influences their success.
“The key is to expose students to experiences and discussions that enable them to make informed decisions, take ownership of their learning, and feel a greater sense of engagement,” says Principal McDiarmid.
St Mary’s offers an education that extends beyond the classroom, leveraging Sydney’s vibrant urban environment as a dynamic learning space.
The College’s programs connect students with cultural institutions like the Australian Museum, the Art Gallery of NSW, and industry leaders such as HEX and Sydney FC. These partnerships provide students with hands-on opportunities and professional mentorship, enhancing their learning experience while preparing them for future careers.
“The city itself is an extended classroom,” explains Principal McDiarmid. “Students have the chance to interact with real-world industries, making informed choices about their futures and increasing their engagement with their studies.”
A notable achievement at St Mary’s is the establishment of the student parliament, inaugurated by alumnus Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
This initiative empowers students to voice opinions, engage in debate, and contribute to school policies, including shaping the College’s AI policy through recent discussions on the role of artificial intelligence in education.
Looking ahead, the College aims to expand its partnerships and continue its mission of shaping forward-thinking individuals who are prepared to make meaningful contributions to society.
Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich
Marist Sisters’ College has been recognised for its outstanding professional culture, a testament to the College’s dedication to staff collaboration, growth, and the ongoing development of a supportive learning environment for both students and teachers.
At the heart of Marist Sisters’ innovation is its Professional Growth in Action (PGIA) program, which encourages collaboration among staff members through action research.
“We were encouraged to nominate for this award by SCS, and when we reflected on where we were being innovative, we knew it was in the Professional Culture space,” says Mrs Melissa Carson, Leader of Professional Identity & Learning. “This process of reflection has been instrumental as we look ahead to our plans for 2025.”
The College’s leadership team has worked diligently to create a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring that ideas generated in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are not only shared but also implemented effectively across the school.
“The PGIA program has been central to creating an environment where staff are committed to their own growth and to improving student outcomes,” adds Mrs. Carson.
Marist Sisters’ has successfully applied the Timperley Model of professional development, which has led to measurable improvements in teaching and student outcomes.
Winning the award for professional culture has been a significant boost for the Marist Sisters’ College community.
It affirms the College’s direction and highlights its commitment to creating an environment where both students and staff can thrive.
This recognition has inspired further plans for 2025, including expanding coaching programs and refining the College’s professional growth strategies.
“We’re excited to continue refining our approach to professional learning,” says Mrs Carson. “This award is both a recognition of where we are now and an inspiration to continue shaping a culture that supports both our staff and students.”
