Marist North Shore’s first co-ed cohort makes history as the HSC begins

As HSC examinations begin today, Year 12 students at Marist Catholic College North Shore are making history as the College's first fully co-educational cohort to sit the Higher School Certificate (HSC).
Founded as a boys' school in 1888, Marist Catholic College North Shore announced its transition to co-education in 2018, welcoming its first female students into Year 7 in 2021.
The change responded to the needs of local families, offering a connected Catholic education pathway from Kindergarten to Year 12 and the opportunity for sons and daughters to attend the same school.
College Principal Anthony Boys reflected on the significance of the milestone for the College community.
"Our first fully co-educational graduating cohort represents a new chapter in the life of the College, one shaped by courage, dignity and a shared commitment to learning," Mr Boys said.
"Their graduation signals not only a structural milestone, but a cultural one, firmly grounded in the Marist values that have guided our community for nearly 140 years."
Reflecting on the College's evolution since its foundation, Mr Boys said:
"This milestone shows that our history is not static but a living story of responding with courage, hope and openness to the future."
For the students, being the first cohort to complete their schooling in a co-educational setting has given them a unique place in the College's story.
"What has stood out most is how naturally and confidently these students embraced their place in the College's story," Mr Boys said.
"They carried the responsibility of being 'the first' with maturity, generosity and a quiet strength that reflects the best of our Marist tradition."
As the College continues to build its co-educational future, Mr Boys said the inaugural cohort would leave a legacy for the students who follow.
"I hope this cohort is remembered not only because they were the first, but because of the way they led, with courage, respect, generosity and a strong sense of community," he said.
"Their legacy is one of culture and character, and it sets a clear foundation for those who follow."
As the students begin their HSC examinations, they are nearing the end of their own school journeys while helping shape what comes next for the College.
Marist Catholic College North Shore and Sydney Catholic Schools wish the students every success in their exams and the next chapter of their lives.
