Every day counts

When a child misses school, they miss opportunities to learn, build friendships and develop confidence. Regular attendance strengthens academic progress and expands future career and life options.

Your Responsibilities as a Parent/Carer

In New South Wales, education is compulsory for children aged 6 to 17 under the Education Act 1990 (NSW).

Parents must:

  • Enrol their child in a registered school or be registered for home schooling.
  • Ensure their child attends school every day it is open for student lessons.
  • Ensure their child has completed Year 10, and if they are under 17 remain in full-time education, training (e.g. TAFE, apprenticeship, traineeship), full-time paid employment (minimum 25 hours per week) or in a combination of work, education and/or training.
Every Minute Counts
  • Notify the school as soon as possible.
  • Provide a valid explanation within 7 days.

Acceptable reasons may include:

  • Illness or infectious disease
  • Serious family circumstances (e.g. funeral)
  • Recognised religious or cultural obligations

For absences of 5 or more school days, parents must apply for extended leave (in advance).

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Obligations

Schools recognise responsibilities such as Sorry Business and significant cultural ceremonies. Families should liaise with the school to arrange appropriate support. Extended leave procedures apply where relevant.

Sydney Catholic Schools:

  • Maintain attendance records in line with legislation.
  • Assess explanations provided by parents.
  • Record absences as “unjustified” if the explanation is not accepted.
  • Contact parents where concerns arise.

Attendance may be considered of concern if a student is absent 10% or more of the time (explained or unexplained).

Where attendance concerns persist, schools may:

  • Request additional documentation (e.g. medical certificates).
  • Collaboratively develop an Attendance Improvement Plan with parents and students.
  • Seek consent to liaise with health professionals if required.

Responding to school relcutance or refulsal: strategies for parentsIf your child is hesitant or refusing to attend school:

  • Speak calmly with your child to understand their concerns.
  • Avoid negative discussions about school that may increase anxiety.
  • Contact your child’s teacher or school leader early.
  • Consider consulting your GP for further support if needed.

Early intervention is critical. Returning to school promptly makes re-engagement easier.

Extended Leave

Sydney Catholic Schools strongly encourage families to avoid travel during scheduled school terms. Where travel during term time is unavoidable, parents and carers are required to notify the school in advance and consult with relevant staff to discuss the potential impact on learning and any applicable attendance requirements. This leave, if granted, will contribute to your child’s total absences for the year.

Exemptions

In exceptional circumstances, parents may apply for a temporary exemption from attendance. Applications must be submitted in advance and are assessed by the Principal. Approval is not automatic.

For participation in elite sport, students must meet the NSW Department of Education’s eligibility criteria for elite sport participation.

Working Together

The most effective way to support attendance is through partnership. Schools and families working together ensure every child is supported to attend regularly, feel safe and succeed.

Every day of attendance strengthens your child’s future.
