About the role

The Governance and Legal Directorate are responsible for overseeing Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) governance framework, its legal and child protection functions.

Reporting to the Director: Governance and Legal, the Chief Risk Officer is responsible for leading SCS’ risk management framework and processes. This role will work closely with the members of the Executive Team, the Audit and Risk Committee and the Governance Team..

In this newly created position, accountabilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate with the Executive Team to drive the development, implementation and maintenance of the a fit-for-purpose risk management framework, and the fraud and corruption framework
  • Lead the identification of actual and emerging risks from organisational structure, regulatory environment, technology and process changes to appropriately target risk and fraud mitigation strategies
  • Liaise with the Executive Team to shape the key risk management vision and appetite in alignment with SCS’ strategy
  • Provide risk management leadership and innovation, and lead communication and training efforts to promote awareness and a strong risk culture across SCS
  • Ensure SCS employees receive appropriate training in relation to their risk management obligations and provide support to risk owners in the management and assessment of their risks
  • Foster an environment of continuous improvement through an emphasis on data-driven analysis and insights to inform dynamic risk management practices and action plans
  • Work with the Governance team to oversee on the compliance management and audit framework, and fraud and risk in outsourced service providers
  • Reporting to the Audit and Risk Committee and the Board, as well as relevant stakeholders as required

About you

To be successful in this position, you must possess:

  • tertiary qualification in business, risk or a related field 
  • a minimum of ten years experience in operational risk management
  • demonstrated success in a similar role
  • deep knowledge and expertise leading organisation-wide risk strategy, managing an enterprise risk management framework, and risk-related functions, processes and controls
  • demonstrated experience providing expert advice and analysis to inform decision-making and stimulate positive risk culture
  • experience leading large projects and work teams
  • proven knowledge of Australian and International regulatory environment for operational risk
  • demonstrated experience and success in driving risk engagement across a large-scale, multi-faceted organisation
  • demonstrated high-level oral and written communication skills including formal briefing papers and management reports
  • experience building strong relationships with key stakeholders and the ability to influence key stakeholders
  • a willingness to respect, support and uphold the mission, ethos and teachings of the Catholic Church and the values of SCS.

Desirable

  • experience working in an education, not-for-profit or public sector organisation
  • knowledge of Catholic Systemic School Systems
  • a current driver’s licence and access to a car
  • a practising Catholic with demonstrated evidence of ongoing commitment to the teachings of the Catholic Church and engagement in the life of a Catholic faith, community such as a parish or an established community within the Catholic Church, as an expression of their relationship with Jesus Christ.
