Good Shepherd’s sense-sational new playground

Students in our  Specialist Support Class at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School Hoxton Park are enjoying a sensory playground created especially for them.

Designed with learning in mind

After careful planning and deliberate design, the newly constructed playground at Good Shepherd has provided keen students the chance to enjoy the safe water play feature, climbing walls, scooter paths and swing.

“The students have been excitedly watching the progress—and the technology and machines! As a result we integrated building and construction into their learning,” said Good Shepherd principal, Leonie Sewell.

The Specialist Support Class teaching staff will incorporate the playground into their learning program through the use of the outdoor learning areas and yarning circles. 

The sensory playground featuring hypoallergenic plants wraps around the classroom to join the Kindergarten playground—creating continuity with the main school.

Specialist Support Classes

Students from Year 2 to Year 6 with intellectual disabilities and complex learning needs undertake a rigorous yet highly supported educational program within a specialised setting.

Prize winning school presents to industry experts

“When I got up there, my stomach dropped…I kept saying, [to myself] I know more about the project than they do, it’s us teaching them,” said Stage 3 student presenter Kate. 

Kate and four other students spoke to a room full of water experts at Sydney Water’s Innovation Festival hosted at The Australian Maritime Museum.

They were representing the Stage 3 STEM Extension class from St Aloysius Catholic Primary School, Cronulla.  

Sydney Water’s Innovation Festival is an industry event celebrating STEM, innovation and water industry successes.

The students presented to over 50 STEM industry professionals and were introduced by Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering Stuart Khan, who is also the Director of Australian Graduate School of Engineering (AGSE).

‘‘In primary school we need to build an active interest and skill base in STEM subjects” – Professor Stuart Khan. 

The young student innovators won the National STEM MAD competition for Primary schools and the Mathematics In Context Award.

The group addressed the UN Sustainability goal for clean water and sanitation helping to solve real world problems.

Through local council partnership and a grant from Sydney Water, the students designed an easy to use app for groundskeepers and engineers to water Cronulla Golf course sustainably, using recycled water and that considered weather patterns amongst other variables.

HSC 2022: The results are in

Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) has achieved outstanding results in the 2022 HSC with nine of its 33 schools ranked among the top 100 high schools in NSW.

A total of 17 schools ranked among the top 150 high schools, underlining SCS’s position as one of the top performing systems in Australia.

SCS recorded an impressive 2630 Distinguished Achievers, 66 Top Achievers and 58 All Rounders.

Notably, nine SCS students also received HSC First in Course honours.

“We are extremely proud of the Class of 2022, who have displayed incredible resilience and commitment throughout their senior years of education,” SCS Director of Education and Research, Dr Kate O’Brien, said.

HSC 2022: Nine students place First in Course

Nine students from Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) have received First in Course honours in the 2022 HSC. 

In a feat that highlights SCS’s comprehensive curriculum, the nine students placed first in a diverse range of subjects and represent seven schools from across the Sydney Archdiocese. 

Marist College Kogarah student Mario Baroud placed first Mathematics Standard 2, Mary MacKillop Catholic College Wakeley student Suzi Coates placed first in Studies of Religion I, and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College Kensington student Otylia Pilat placed first in English Extension 1.

Clancy Catholic College West Hoxton student Daniel Michael placed first in Investigating Science, Good Samaritan Catholic College Hinchinbrook student Katarina Chalfa placed first in Food Technology, and Marist Catholic College Penshurst student Anna-Maria Parissis placed first in Modern Greek. 

St Ursula’s College Kingsgrove student Clara Medanic placed first in Croatian Continuers, while La Salle Catholic College Bankstown students Danny Nouseir and Verica Minovska placed first in Arabic Extension and Macedonian Continuers continuers respectively. 

The nine were among the 126 students from 83 schools in the state who topped their HSC courses.  

The students were acknowledged this morning in a ceremony with Sarah Mitchell, Minister for Education and Early Learning.

Students art shines a light on the Christmas Story

Sydney Catholic Schools students have showcased their creative flair and theological understanding as the 2022 Christmas Story Art Exhibition and Competition opened at the University of Notre Dame on Sunday. 

Now in its 17th year, the exhibition invites students in Years 5 and 6 to showcase both their artistic talent and their connection to their faith. 

This year, thousands of students across Sydney Catholic Schools participated in the competition.

Along with the selected entries from the Dioceses of Bathurst and Wollongong, and Catholic students from government schools, close to 400 artworks were submitted for judging this year, with 23 being awarded prizes.

Inspired by the scriptures 

Students engaged in the Sydney Religious Education Curriculum and verses from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke to produce artworks and accompanying reflections that spoke to their understanding of the Christmas story.

It’s been an exciting couple of months for St Vincent’s College Ashfield. 

Following the announcement of Ray Martin as the College’s principal last month, the College this month announced its inaugural leadership team, while also revealing the College crest and colours.

Together, the announcements represent a transformative period for education in Sydney’s inner west and for the area’s parents, carers and students.

In this Q&A, Nina Cook—who has children at each of the three Ashfield schools—gives a parent’s perspective of the amalgamation and how it will benefit the community’s families.

With news of the three Ashfield schools combining to become one K-12 College, what were your initial thoughts?

NC: I was thrilled with the idea. After attending all three schools’ parent forums in 2019 and discussing the possibilities with the executive and teachers at all three schools regularly in recent years, I was hoping this would happen. My only reservations were about losing the best educators we have here on the block. I am hoping there will be a concerted effort to retain our dedicated faculty.

Do you feel that the transition process from one stage of school to the next will be very different in this new learning model and what are your expectations with regards to this?

NC: I am hoping for a thorough process of information sharing to avoid all the time that can be lost from grade to grade and particularly from Year 6 to 7. St Vincent’s crest and colours revealed

Sydney Catholic Schools is excited to reveal the crest and colours for St Vincent’s College Ashfield. 

The crest and colours have been carefully crafted to reflect the College’s future-focused outlook while maintaining and respecting the esteemed history and unique identity of our three Ashfield schools: St Vincent’s Catholic Primary School, Bethlehem College and De La Salle College.

The colours of St Vincent’s College have been adopted from the three existing schools—gold from St Vincent’s Catholic Primary School, navy from De La Salle College and lavender from Bethlehem College. 

Following an extensive design and consultation process, a new college crest has been created which incorporates elements of the amalgamated schools together in a contemporary style that speaks to the College’s bold vision.

A centred ‘V’ denotes the school patron Saint Vincent de Paul, while a five-point star and an elevated cross—symbols shared by the three schools—allude to Christ being at the centre of faith and education. 

A wreath of olive branches—which also features in the De La Salle College crest—speaks to the College’s vision of creating a just and equitable world, and appears alongside a gold shield of faith that represents the College’s ‘Church to the World’ motto.

The revealing of the crest and colours comes as the College’s inaugural leadership team was also announced this week.

Wellbeing pups top of the class

They might have only just begun their schooling journeys but two very special staff members have already sent tails wagging. 

In a Sydney Catholic Schools first, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Oatley and St Michael’s Catholic Primary School Meadowbank both introduced wellbeing dogs into their school communities last week.

St Joseph’s welcomed the adorable Winnie into their school, while the loveable Micky is St Michael’s newest addition. 

The dogs are both four-month-old Groodles, who also happen to be sisters and littermates.  

The pair were sourced by Dogs Connect, a world-first mental health and wellness program that integrates wellbeing doings into schools and workplaces. 

A helping hand

Kylie Brakel, Principal at St Joseph’s, said the arrival of Winnie was the culmination of many years of research and months of preparation. 

“I’ve been researching the use of wellbeing dogs for some time now, so I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to implement it,” Mrs Brakel said. 

“Wellbeing dogs are shown to help reduce anxiety among children, to help those who have experienced trauma, and to help teach social and emotional regulation” – Kylie Brakel

Mrs Brakel noted that she’s already seen an enormous difference in the behaviours of both students and staff.

“It’s been great to see the smiles on their faces – you could see the happiness and positivity that Winnie brought right from the first day,” she said. 

“I had a parent even say to me, ‘I have never seen such a happy group of children.’” 

The students at St Joseph’s have loved Winnie visit their classrooms.

Blessed Sacrament teacher spins A Spider’s Tale

Blessed Sacrament Catholic Primary School Clifton Gardens can proudly boast having a children’s author among their ranks after Year 2 teacher Jesse James Muir published his first picture book, A Spider’s Tale.   

The book tells the story of a lonely spider named Tom who sets off on an adventure in search of friendship and learns a thing or two about humans along the way. 

Released by British publishing house Austin Macauley in March, the book has been met with widespread acclaim from students and parents alike.

Mr Muir is hoping to release his second book in the new future

Lighting the flame

Mr Muir, a former rugby player who plied his trade in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, began formulating the idea for the book while studying at university. 

 “In education you come across a lot of picture books and it lights the flame for wanting to do one yourself” – Jesse James Muir 

“I wrote it while I was at university and it was a bit of procrastination,” Mr Muir said. 

“I had always wanted to write a book and when I was swamped with assignments it seemed like a good time to do it.”

Spreading the message of empathy

In the book, Tom the spider has set his sights on making friends with the humans who live in the farm house. 

But despite his best intentions, he soon learns that humans are not particularly fond of spiders. 

Mr Muir said he didn’t plan the narrative or moral of the story before writing the book, rather it came out organically once he put pen to paper.

See Bondi through our student’s eyes

Students from Galilee Catholic Primary Bondi can’t wait to take visitors on a walking tour of their beloved village, as part of the 2022 Bondi Festival.

Curated by kids from Galilee Bondi in collaboration with an artist, The Village By the Kids walking tour will see nine students take groups on an adventure through North Bondi on the weekends of 9-10 and 16-17 July.

“The walking route was designed by the kids with locations holding significance to them,” Brian Anderson, Principal of Galilee Bondi, said.

The tour begins in front of Galilee Primary and takes the audience on a walk through the neighbourhood with stops at the local framing store and hairdresser, the local butcher, a street garden, a local reserve and back to the main street.

Their mini-guides will be Year 5 students Chloe, Tayla, Khloe, Jasmine, Xavier, Mila, Flynn, Marcus and Tyler who have loved every minute of this experience.

Comments have ranged from “I have had a great time being a part of this project” and “I had so much fun” to “I loved walking through the neighbourhood during school and meeting local businesses” and “I had a great time recording our stories”.

NAPLAN begins on Tuesday 10 May

MEDIA RELEASE – Issued by Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA)

The annual NAPLAN assessment begins tomorrow, with 1.2 million students set to take the test in more than 9,500 schools and campuses across Australia.

This year marks the final year of transition to online testing, with all schools across Australia now participating in NAPLAN tests online.

“NAPLAN online is a better, more precise assessment that is more engaging for students,” ACARA CEO, David de Carvalho, said.

“The tailored testing means students are given questions that are better suited to their abilities, so they can show what they know and can do.

“NAPLAN online also has a variety of accessibility adjustments, so that students with diverse capabilities, learning needs and functional abilities are able to participate.

Mr de Carvalho said NAPLAN was entering a new era, with 2022 being the first year all schools will take the test online and the last year that the test will take place in May.

“Earlier this year, education ministers announced that NAPLAN will move from May to March from 2023, so results will be available to education authorities earlier in the year to inform school and system teaching and learning programs,” said Mr de Carvalho.

“These changes mean that the valuable NAPLAN data will be more useful to teachers, schools and education authorities.”

NAPLAN tests are the only measure governments, education authorities, schools and parents/carers have to see whether young Australians are reaching important literacy and numeracy goals using a national, objective scale.

“This year’s test is particularly important so that we can add to a national data set and continue getting insight into the impact the pandemic has had after 2 years of disruptions to schooling,” Mr de Carvalho said.

Get a head start with Step Up Into Teaching

Sydney Catholic Schools and the Australian Catholic University are once again teaming up for the Step Up Into Teaching program, providing high school students the chance to experience university life, gain early entry into teaching courses and receive credit towards their degree. 

Step Up Into Teaching (SUIT) is an early entry university program run by the Australian Catholic University (ACU), offering high school students considering a career in teaching a head start on their learning journey.

Students participating in SUIT have the opportunity to study one or two modules equivalent to university level units while completing their high school studies.

Modules include: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledges, Histories and Cultures (EDEZ105) which develops students’ understanding of, and respect for Indigenous culture; and Digital Cultures and Capabilities (EDEZ104), which helps students understand the influence of digital technologies on contemporary life. 

Students who pass their SUIT studies will receive an offer to study a Bachelor of Education degree at ACU and can receive credit (recognition of prior learning) for one or two specified units in early childhood, primary or secondary teaching courses.

Studying university subjects through the SUIT program is also HECS free – ACU and Sydney Catholic Schools are this year providing 40 funded places for students, 30 more than in 2021.

2021 HSC Virtual Showcase: Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts

Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) celebrates the final selection of students who have been included in the 2021 HSC Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts Showcases. 

Following a rigorous selection process by an experienced panel, 72 students were selected in the showcases after demonstrating outstanding talent in creative and performing arts.  Click here to view the showcase selection list

These students were selected from 173 nominations submitted by schools for exemplary work in their practical components of the HSC courses. 

The HSC Creative & Performing Arts Showcases provide a professional platform to celebrate exemplary students of Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Arts while also serving as a benchmark of excellence for younger emerging talent. 

Although the showcases were planned to be unveiled in a series of in-person events, COVID disruptions mean that this year they will be presented virtually.

Results and Photos: SCS Swimming Championships 2022

An unprecedented 938 students from 123 schools lit up the pool at the Sydney Catholic Schools Swimming Championships at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre in Homebush on Tuesday 15 March 2022. 

In what was a Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) first, students from both primary and secondary schools competed on the same day. 

The morning saw 390 students from 85 schools compete across 140 races, while the afternoon and evening session involved 548 students from 38 high schools competing across 100 races.

LEADING THE WAY

The day was a chance for some of the best young swimmers in Sydney to show their potential and they certainly didn’t disappoint with a number of SCS records tumbling. Brother-sister duo Ella and Max from St Therese Catholic Primary School Mascot dominated in the primary session, with the pair breaking two records each on their way to both being crowned Age Champions. 

10-year-old Ella broke records in the 50m freestyle and the 50m backstroke, while 12-year-old Max set new benchmarks in the 50m freestyle and the 200m individual medley. 

Standouts in the secondary session included 14-year-old St Mary’s Cathedral College student Victor Strokin winning an incredible 10 races, and 16-year-old Payne Nell from St John Bosco College Engadine who came out on top in seven races.

Online exhibition: 2022 Portrait Prize

The winning artists of Sydney Catholic Schools’ inaugural Portrait Prize have been announced and will now have their work displayed at the Art Gallery of NSW.

The four inaugural Portrait Prize winners are:

  • 5-8 year-olds – Grace MacFarlane – St. Patrick’s Catholic Primary School, Sutherland
  • 9-12 year-olds – Sofia Pirrello – St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Oatley
  • 13-15 year-olds – Tatum O’Connor – Mount St Joseph College, Milperra
  • 16-18 year-olds – Silaar Gorbthum – Freeman Catholic College, Bonnyrigg

The Portrait Prize attracted a strong field of 211 entries from talented young artists in Kindergarten through to Year 12.  

The annual Portrait Prize gives students the chance to recognise and appreciate someone well-known to them and who plays a significant role in their life by paying them one of the highest compliments – painting or drawing their portrait.

The theme for the inaugural Portrait Prize was: Me, You, Us. 

Dr Kate O’Brien, Director of Education and Research at Sydney Catholic Schools, said there was an extremely high level of artistic talent among the entries. 

“We were incredibly excited to see what artworks our students were going to produce and we certainly were not disappointed,” Dr O’Brien said.

Bethlehem #BreakTheBias on International Women’s Day

Bethlehem College Ashfield commemorated International Women’s Day 2022 with a special assembly that celebrated the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. 

The assembly featured a guest talk from business leader, politician, and mother of two, Bridget Sakr. 

An alumni of the College, Mrs Sakr delivered an emotional address about her pathway to success and gave advice as to how young women can achieve their goals and aspirations.

Howzat?: New cricket facilities unveiled

Students at Patrician Brothers’ College Fairfield can further hone their cricket skills thanks to eight newly refurbished batting nets.

The cricket facility was officially opened on Friday, February 18, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Tony Farley, Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools, and Fairfield state MP, Guy Zangari.

The upgrade was made possible through two rounds of funding from the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership program.

Located alongside the College’s green fields and basketball courts, the cricket nets will be a major boost to the College’s students, who will enjoy regular use of the facility during PDHPE lessons and cricket training.

Peter Wade, Principal at Patrician Brothers’ College Fairfield, said the new facility was the culmination of plenty of hard work from a collection of key people. 

“I would like to thank Tony Farley and Sydney Catholic Schools for their contribution to the project, as well as Guy Zangari for his ongoing support of the College,” Mr Wade said.

“A special mention also to Kerry Logue, the College’s Business Manager, and Craig Wasson, who is responsible for the College’s grounds and maintenance, for their assistance in bringing the facility to life.”

Mr Wade said the students at the College are now eyeing off what promises to be an exciting year of cricket.

Muayad’s remarkable journey to HSC success

Good Samaritan Catholic College Hinchinbrook graduate Muayad Alyousuf shares his journey from fleeing war-torn Iraq to finding HSC success in Australia.

The Good Samaritan Catholic College Vice Captain and graduate scored an ATAR of 96.10 in his 2021 HSC, achieving Band 6’s in Advanced Mathematics, Studies of Religion I and Business Services Examination.

But his road to HSC success was harder than most. 

In 2014, Muayad was forced to flee his hometown of Mosul when ISIS insurgents overtook the city.

Two years later, Muayad and his family would arrive in Australia, facing the daunting task of restarting their lives in a foreign land.

In this Q&A, Muayad recounts some of the challenges he overcame in his pursuit of an education. 

Congratulations Muayad on your results! What was your reaction when you saw them? 

Muayad: When I saw my HSC results I was content with what I had but disappointed in Chemistry as I was hoping for a Band 6! Nevertheless, I was still happy that my lowest subject was an 87! 

My ATAR reaction was priceless. I was hoping to achieve a 95+ in order to reward the effort that I have put into my studies for the past 13 years. When I opened that ATAR page and saw 96.10 all I could do was laugh. After looking at my ATAR my parents realised what a massive achievement their son had accomplished!

Celebrating Healthy Friendship Week

The importance of human connection will be celebrated in Sydney Catholic schools, parishes and homes during Healthy Friendship Week (21-25 February). 

An initiative of CatholicCare – the social services agency of the Archdiocese of Sydney – Healthy Friendship Week will see communities engaging in a range of fun activities centred around building positive friendships. 

Designed for children aged 5-12 years, the activities are linked to the Religious Education (RE) and Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) curriculum outcomes and can be accessed via the Healthy Friendship Week website.  

The activities can occur in-class or at lunchtime, can be added to homework grids, or can be undertaken at home with parents and guardians. 

Anthony Cleary, Director of Mission and Identity at Sydney Catholic Schools, said Healthy Friendship Week comes as a great reminder of the value of being there for one another.

“One of the great challenges of our time is the need for people to develop genuine and life-giving relationships,” Mr Cleary said.

“Friendships can help us in so many ways and we know that the experience of good and healthy friendships makes the world seem a much better place.

Revealed: HSC First in Course awards

Six students from Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) have received HSC First in Course honours in a year like no other.

Remarkably, in the Construction Examination Aquinas Catholic College Menai Year 12 graduates Oliver Wells and Brock Wilson, together with Clancy Catholic College West Hoxton’s Tony Khattar, topped the course in a three-way tie.  

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic College Kensington student Diana Vlahos topped Biology, Bethany College Hurstville student Corina Choy topped Mathematics Standard 1, and Patrician Brothers’ College Fairfield student Brent Macaraeg topped Italian Beginners. 

Two SCS students who studied external courses to their school also placed first in the state: Bethany Catholic College Hurstville student Jovanka Lim in Indonesian and Literature, and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College Kensington student Christina Solyom in Hungarian Continuers.

The awards place the students among NSW’s top achievers from the 76,399 students who sat one or more HSC courses this year. 

The students were today acknowledged in an online ceremony by Sarah Mitchell, Minister for Education and Early Learning. 

LEADERS OF THE PACK

It was a case of three of a kind in the Construction Examination, with Aquinas students Oliver Wells and Brock Wilson sharing first place with Clancy’s Tony Khattar.

The trio said it was an unexpected honour but one that they all worked extremely hard to achieve.

Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School Miranda student Coen Hardy has been awarded a sports medallion at the 2021 Primary Sports Awards.

Coen received the medallion for his selection into the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association (NSWPSSA) State Merit Team for Australian Football.

The sport medallion is awarded to Sydney Catholic School students who have represented MacKillop on three or more occasions and/or were selected into a NSWPSSA State Merit Team during the school year.

Coen was one of seven students to receive a medallion during a virtual ceremony, held in December 2021.

Sydney Catholic Schools establishes two vaccination hubs

Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) has partnered with South East Sydney Local Health District to establish vaccination hubs for 5-11 year-olds at two of its schools: Marcellin College Randwick and St Patrick’s College Sutherland.

The Marcellin College hub is located in the Marist Centre (entrance off Avoca Street, Randwick, next to Royal Randwick Shopping Centre) while the St Patrick’s College Sutherland hub is located in Rice Hall (entrance off President Avenue, Sutherland). 

These pop up clinics have been established to provide a known and comfortable place within our system of schools for our youngest students to be vaccinated. 

Bookings are available through NSW Health from 18-21 January and the clinic will be set up again eight weeks after the first appointment so that the children can receive their second dose. 

Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools, Mr Tony Farley, said “I hope that setting up these clinics will give parents the comfort and confidence of a familiar location and community approach to access vaccination.”

“Our schools are places of safety and certainty and the close collaboration between our staff, parents and students is the key to meeting and overcoming any challenges in the future,” Mr Farley added.

Known as someone who is extremely self-motivated, Willow comes to school every morning having already done some form of training.

St Francis de Sales Catholic Primary Woolooware student Joshua Dann has been awarded a sports medallion at the 2021 Primary Sports Awards.

Joshua received a medallion after being named in the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association (NSWPSSA) State Merit Team for Australian Football.

The sport medallion is awarded to Sydney Catholic School students who have represented MacKillop on three or more occasions and/or were selected into an NSWPSSA State Merit Team during the school year.

Joshua says making the team after the NSWPSSA Boys Australian Football Championship in Byron Bay is his greatest sporting achievement. He was also pleased to receive a sports medallion.

“I felt immensely proud but also happy that I got the recognition for what I did in Byron and all the other sports through my school,” Joshua said.

Ennis wants to give kids a sporting chance

Former Bulldogs and Sharks NRL star Michael Ennis is one of the exciting names to join Sydney Catholic Schools’ Sports Council.

As an NRL premiership winner and New South Wales State of Origin representative, Michael Ennis has plenty to be proud about in his rugby league career.

And Mr Ennis also wants to one day look back proudly at his time with Sydney Catholic Schools’ (SCS) newly formed Sports Council.

The former Bulldogs and Sharks star is one of three representatives from outside SCS to join the Council and lend their expertise.

“I never like looking too far ahead but I suppose I’d like to get to a position where we can all as a group go ‘Well look what we’ve been able to create. Look what opportunities we’ve been able to further and extend and give the kids’,” Mr Ennis said.

Familiar face on and off the field

Mr Ennis has been a well-known face to rugby league supporters since making his first grade debut for the Newcastle Knights in 2003.

Playing as a hooker, a demanding position, he showed great longevity to continue his career for another 13 seasons, finishing with 273 NRL games.

That included stops at four other clubs: the Brisbane Broncos, St George Illawarra Dragons, Canterbury Bulldogs and Cronulla Sharks.

He also achieved representative honours, playing eight games in the prestigious State of Origin series for New South Wales against Queensland.

Mr Ennis played his final NRL game in 2016, going out in style with a Grand Final win for Cronulla, and has stayed busy as an analyst for the Fox League channel.

Opportunity for all: Why inclusion in sport matters

Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) has affirmed its commitment to making school sport more inclusive after welcoming Leisl Stimpson, Special Olympics Australia’s National Schools Manager, to its newly formed Sports Council.

An experienced sports administrator with a passion for working with people with disabilities, Ms Stimpson is one of three external experts named on the Council, which aims to create more opportunities for students at all levels.

Ms Stimpson joins former NSW rugby league star Michael Ennis and former Australian netball player Kim Green as Council members, alongside six internal SCS experts.

CHANGING THE GAME

Ms Stimpson is passionate about working with those with disabilities.

Ms Stimpson said she was excited about contributing to what promises to be a big year for sport at Sydney Catholic Schools.

“At Special Olympics Australia, we’re really looking forward to bringing our expertise to the table and helping make programs inclusive,” Ms Stimpson said.

St Columba’s duo make history

St Columba’s Catholic Primary School Leichhardt North students Catherine Angelos and Molly Smith have been named joint state winners in the 2021 National History Challenge.

The National History Challenge is a research-based competition, run by the History Teachers’ Association of Australia, in which students explore a topic of their choosing while responding to a set theme. The 2021 theme was Significance: History Matters.

Year 3 student Catherine investigated the significance of Florence Nightingale’s contributions to the nursing industry in a Google Slides presentation. Year 4 student Molly wrote an essay that considered issues associated with the discovery of Mungo Man by Jim Bowler and his archaeological team.

The pair jointly took out top honours in the Primary 1 category (Years 1-4) for NSW and were presented with certificates in a ceremony at the ANZAC Memorial at Hyde Park on Monday, 6 December.

Inspiration strikes

Catherine said the idea for researching Florence Nightingale came to her after watching the TV series Horrible Histories.

“I had just watched an episode about Florence Nightingale and thought it would be a good topic because of its link to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Catherine explained.

“It’s really interesting that Florence Nightingale’s contributions continue to be used in modern nursing” – Catherine Angelos 

Meanwhile, Molly’s research was prompted by her teacher, Cara Fletcher-Murphy (St Columba’s Newman Facilitator and Diverse Learning Co-Ordinator).

New playground unveiled

St Paul of the Cross Catholic Primary School Dulwich Hill has completed a major upgrade of its main playground space.

New handball courts and basketball markings ensure there will be no shortage of games to play during lunch and recess breaks.

And the school’s junior thespians can look forward to bringing characters to life on the new outdoor stage, which is adorned with pillars bearing the school’s values.

The playground makeover is the result of a three-year collaboration between St Paul teachers, student leaders, Sydney Catholic Schools and Urban Landscape Designs.

Other features include shade sails and updated seating creating areas, for both passive play and quiet reflection, and artificial turf has been laid over the entire playground space.

The landscaped gardens and new play equipment offer further opportunities for imaginative and creative play.

The Sports Council will play a pivotal role in the streamlining of structural and administration functions in Sport across all 150 primary and secondary schools in the Sydney Catholic Schools system.

About the Sports Council

Chaired by Dr Kate O’Brien, Sydney Catholic Schools’ Director: Education and Research, the Sports Council aims to create more sporting opportunities for students at all levels, as well as increasing access to participation in elite sport.

Seven students were presented with sport medallions after demonstrating a remarkable level of representation in their chosen sports throughout 2021.

Each student represented MacKillop on three or more occasions and/or were selected into a NSW Primary Schools Sports Association (NSWPSSA) State merit team during the school year.

Bethany College pair celebrate short film success

Bethany Catholic College Hurstville students Tea Leone and Eden Fernando have been named winners of the junior category of ProPsych’s 2021 Mentalicious Film Competition.

The Year 9 students took out the category with their short film Can I Talk To You? impressing the judges and scoring the pair $500 in prize money.

The Mentalicious Film Competition is the brainchild of ProPsych, an initiative that focuses on mental health in schools.

The competition is open to Australian and New Zealand students in Years 7-12 and aims to showcase the filmmaking talents of students while raising awareness and eradicating stigma surrounding mental health.

No substitute for the real thing

As young adults who have grown up in the digital age, Tea and Eden said they wanted to highlight the importance of real, human connection in their film.

“Our film draws attention to the importance of human connection and relationships, even as technology becomes increasingly present in our society,” Tea explained.

“Though technology can make some aspects of life easier and more convenient, it can’t replace everything” – Tea Leone   

“Ultimately, as shown in our short film, a conversation with a robot isn’t half as helpful or effective as a genuine conversation with another human being,” Eden added.

Talking about a revolution

Tea and Eden said they hope their film helps to spark change in the way humans interact with technology.

“With the theme being Imagine a Mental Health Revolution, we were really drawn to the word ‘revolution’, and this was what sparked the final plot of the film,” said Tea.

“We thought about a futuristic revolution and the possibility of technology, for example robots and AI (artificial intelligence), taking over society.”

WATCH LIVE: Sydney Catholic Schools’ Primary Sports Awards

Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) will recognise its high-achieving 2021 student athletes during a Primary Sports Awards ceremony on Friday, 3 December. 

The ceremony will be streamed live on Sydney Catholic Schools’ Facebook page at 9am and will also be available for later viewing on the SCS website and YouTube channel. 

More than 130 students will be congratulated for their sporting achievements during the ceremony, with a special focus on seven rising stars who will receive a sports medallion for demonstrating a remarkable level of representation in their chosen sport. 

The awards will also feature guest appearances from Kim Green, former Australian netballer and St Patrick’s College Sutherland alumna, as well as Michael Ennis, former NSW rugby league star and current Fox Sports presenter. 

Damien Kerr, Manager: Pre to Post Sport at SCS, said the awards will be a great opportunity to highlight the hard work and talent of students this year. 

“Despite an interrupted year due to COVID-19, our students have continued to display a remarkable level of dedication in all sports, at all levels,” Mr Kerr said. 

“We’re excited about being able to celebrate these achievements and to also help inspire our students to keep striving for bigger and better things.”

Dr Kate O’Brien, Director: Education and Research at SCS, said the awards are also a chance to thank the large number of people in our school communities that have contributed to the success of our sporting programs.

“In what has been a challenging year for sport in our schools, we truly appreciate the parents, school and community staff who work tirelessly to support our athletes to excel,” Dr O’Brien said.

Clancy student scoops design gong

Clancy Catholic College West Hoxton student Ava Eden has been named the winner of the 2020 Technology Education Challenge (TECx) – the largest online design challenge for students studying technology education in Australia.

The challenge required students to submit a concept that would help solve one of the complex and critical world problems highlighted by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Ava’s innovative water distribution system concept –  which assists in solving issues relating to water availability during periods of drought in Australia – was deemed the winner after receiving the most votes.

The Year 8 student also received her very own brand-new 3D printer for taking out first place.

Doing it for the country

Ava’s concept featured a design for a mechanism that would capture rainwater in areas of Australia that experience high rainfall and would then redistribute that water to drought-affected areas of the country.

Ava said her idea was prompted by the need for Australians to act on climate issues which could soon become irreversible.

“Australia has been going through so many natural disasters in the last few years including drought and the bushfires, and I saw how much this has impacted the environment and the wildlife,” Ava said.

“I really wanted to think of an idea that could reduce this impact and help this problem.”

Song of hope proves a lockdown winner

An original song by Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School Mt Pritchard’s Year 3 Green class was one of the standout category winners of the Lockdown Arts Festival.

Written by Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School Mt Pritchard music teacher, Samantha MacBride, and performed by the school’s Year 3 Green class, Windows is an emotive ballad about being hopeful for the future that lies ahead.

The song speaks about Year 3 Green’s own experiences of life in lockdown and was also influenced by Miss MacBride reflecting on the recent loss of her mother.

Performed virtually by Miss MacBride and Year 3 Green, Windows was one of 900 creative works submitted by Sydney Catholic Schools’ students, families and staff during the festival.

The song was awarded first prize in the Music – Performance, Primary Class category of the Sydney Catholic Schools’ Lockdown Arts Festival.

The bright side of life

Before writing the song, Miss MacBride said she asked Year 3 Green to reflect on their experiences of life in lockdown.

“I decided to ask the children about the things they missed, the things they were looking forward to, how life has changed and how they were feeling about getting back to normal,” Miss MacBride said.

“I used some of their reflections, words and phrases to then put the lyrics of the song together, with some of my own thoughts intermingled as well.”

Miss MacBride said she also set out to have the song speak about God’s role in helping us overcome adversity.

Noah scores big with little idea

St Paul of the Cross Catholic Primary School Dulwich Hill student Noah Espiritu has been named a finalist in Origin Energy’s 2021 Little Big Idea competition.

The Australia-wide competition called for students to submit an idea for an invention or concept that could help change the world.

Noah’s idea, Sports Hang – an app that helps connect kids who are looking to play sports with others – was named as one of four finalists in the Years 5 & 6 category.

The Year 6 student was awarded $1,000 as a finalist and is now in the running for the $10,000 major prize which will be announced on Friday 19 November.

FANCY A GAME?

Noah said his idea for Sports Hang was prompted by seeing kids at the park who were alone and playing by themselves.

“Sometimes I feel like that too and I find it hard to go up to other kids and talk to them,” he said.

“I have two younger brothers I play with but sometimes I get bored and want to play with kids my age.

“I thought my idea could help kids connect and socialise safely” – Noah Espiritu

As part of his submission, Noah put together a 200 word rationale outlining his vision for Sports Hang and how it could make an impact in the lives of kids all around the globe.

Noah’s entry was one of four finalists in his age group in Australia.

As a finalist, Noah was given a one-on-one mentoring session with social impact entrepreneur Simon Doble to help develop his idea ahead of a final pitch video presentation for the judges.

Noah said Simon passed on some invaluable wisdom about concepting and developing an idea.

English HSC: How to write a cracking Module C Part B

To help you out, here are some handy tips for a specific component of the English HSC exam: the Module C Part B question. 

The Module C Part B question requires you to reflect upon your own work and to demonstrate what you have learnt about the craft of writing. 

This guide is drawn from Sydney Catholic Schools’ Masterclasses series, which offers 38 sessions across 15 HSC subjects.  

What is Module C Part B?

  • Module C forms part of Paper 2 – it is worth 20 marks and you are advised to allocate 40 minutes to this section
  • It will either consist of a one- or two-part question, however there is no guarantee of a Part B question (the 2020 paper did not have a Part B, but the 2019 paper did) 
  • Part B requires you to explain and justify the choices you made in your writing in Part A
  • You may be required to demonstrate how your writing links to at least one of the prescribed texts that you have studied as part of your Craft of Writing course

What is the purpose of Module C Part B?

The purpose is to demonstrate:

  • Your appreciation of the impact your reading of the model texts has had on your own writing 
  • Your confidence in your own writing and your ability to craft writing to the demands of the question
  • Your appreciation of, and engagement with, your own writing 
  • Your ability to make connections between your own writing and that of the models
