Hedge your bets for career success

Studying at Southern Cross Catholic College has allowed Year 12 student Demetrius Thalasselis the freedom to hedge his career bets.

Demetrius is studying for a Certificate II in Construction, Baking and Hospitality all at the same time.

“My dad is a painter and I like to eat,” Demetrius said with a laugh. 

He said during “Hospo”, which is his name for Hospitality, he can “be in my own zone, listen to music and dance a bit, and let my food do the talking.”

Innovation and Enterprise

The College’s Innovation and Enterprise pathway has a special focus on employability through a wide range of career pathways, traineeships and apprenticeships.

Students are offered the opportunity to complete their HSC along with dual nationally accredited Certificates II or III, in addition to completing the first stage of an apprenticeship or full traineeship by the end of Year 12 across a range of courses.

“You wake up at four or five (in the morning), you drive the distance,” said Demetrius, who is a fierce advocate for “doing what you love” and “doing it with your passion.”

This is why he is “okay with the hours” because he understands it’s part and parcel of achieving his career goals.

The report showcases schools at the forefront of change and innovation, and whose new approaches to teaching and learning are shaping the educational landscape of the future.

Southern Cross plies new trades

Students keen to ply a trade can now tap into their passions from Year 9 at Sydney Catholic Schools’ Southern Cross Catholic College at Burwood.

The Innovation and Enterprise specialisation provides a special focus on employability through a wide range of available traineeships and apprenticeships where students are able to fast-track their training into a career.

Starting from next year the Year 11-12 college will also open its doors to Year 9 and 10 innovation and enterprise students for the first time.

“Our new ‘innovation and enterprise’ career pathway is offering Certificate I courses to Year 9 students in automotive, construction, hospitality, retail and technology,” principal Tony Patton explained excitedly.

“Post-school destination tracking of past students shows that 95 per cent of students are in further training, education and/or employment within six months of leaving Southern Cross” – Michael Morris

The college will also start offering full-time courses for students in Years 9 to 12 in Music, Dance, Drama, and Musical Theatre through the Performing Arts specialisation.

This will be in addition to the popular part-time ViVA! and CaSPA performing arts programs that will continue to be offered to all SCS secondary students at the college.

“As part of our repositioning we have dropped the ‘Vocational’ out of Southern Cross Catholic Vocational College but only to better reflect who we are: a Catholic college where students of all abilities can shine brightly, whether they are born to dance or to ply their trade,” Mr Patton said.

Student Acceptable Use of Technology Agreement

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), means that students bring to school personally owned devices for the purpose of learning.

The access to devices that a BYOD program provides, will assist students in developing digitalliteracy, fluency and citizenship while preparing them for the high-tech world in which they will live, learn and work. It will have the potential to empower students by giving them a voice in the
decision making process of how they use technology in their own learning.

It will also allow teachers to continue to employ technology in the classroom while building on the experiences gained in the previously government-supported Digital Education Revolution (DER) model (2008).

This policy applies to all SCS staff, students and parents/carers. In this policy staff means all employees of SCS, members of religious orders engaged in schools, volunteers, trainees, interns and labour hire employees.

The following principles guide how this policy will operate in practice:

3.1 Equity and access to technology should be provided for all SCS students.

3.2 SCS schools will endeavor to provide a safe and secure online environment for all learning activities.
