2022 Winter Season Championships Results

Sydney Catholic Schools’ inaugural Winter Season Championships came to an exciting close today with winners crowned in football and netball. 

Twelve secondary schools from across the Archdiocese of Sydney competed in Sydney Catholic Schools’ first ever Football Championships and Netball Championships.  

Damien Kerr, Manager: Sport Pre to Post at Sydney Catholic Schools, said the day was a celebration of both students’ abilities and the hard work of teachers and support staff. 

“It’s just magnificent to see students from all corners of the [Sydney] Archdiocese, the best of the best, able to come together and showcase the Catholic education sporting community” – Damien Kerr 

“Events like this don’t happen without the support of the teachers — it’s the passion, the time they put in and everything else around it that makes it a great experience for our students,” Mr Kerr said.

FOOTBALL LIGHTS UP EDENSOR PARKSydney Catholic Schools Winter Championships Football Holy Cross Ryde Celebrates

On what was a glorious winter’s day, the crowd was treated to a smorgasbord of footballing talent across six games at Edensor Park’s Sydney United Sports Centre. 

St Ursula’s College Kingsgrove triumphed in the Senior Girls, with Holy Cross College Ryde taking out the Senior Boys title. 

Marist Sisters College Woolwich claimed the trophy in the Junior Girls and Christian Brothers’ High School Lewisham were victorious in the Intermediate Boys. 

Marist Catholic College Penshurst were the big winners on the day, coming out on top in both the Junior Boys and Intermediate Girls.

Green wants girls to aim for the top

More female Sydney Catholic Schools’ (SCS) students will aspire to become Olympians, if former Australian netballer and SCS alumna Kimberlee Green has her way.

Green, who represented the Australian Diamonds national netball team 74 times, is one of the big names to join SCS’ newly formed Sports Council.

The Council will aim to provide more sporting opportunities for all 150 SCS schools, including more access to participation in elite sport.

“I want to be able to bring a different view, especially coming from women’s sport, I’m really passionate about making sure there’s great opportunities there” – Kimberlee Green

“You have a look at the Olympics coming up and there’s quite a few women’s sports that are going to be there,” Ms Green said.

“How do we get as many students as possible putting their hands up for selection? That’s what I hope for my position.”

A DIAMOND STUDDED CAREER

Ms Green is certainly no stranger to sport at the upper echelons.

Her mother is an Olympian and a Commonwealth Games champion swimmer, her father is a former South Sydney rugby league player. She is married to former Test cricketer Trent Copeland.

And Ms Green is a decorated netballer in her own right.

She started her career at the Sydney Swifts as a 16-year-old while still at school. She was on the NSW Swifts team when they won the first Trans-Tasman ANZ Championship in 2008.

She left the Swifts at the end of the 2016 season to become the inaugural captain of GIANTS Netball, in the Super Netball competition, before retiring in 2019.

Three sports, one dream

There were three different sports on offer across three different locations in Canberra on Friday 30 April, as the MacKillop Championships took centre stage in rugby league, netball and hockey.

More than 60 students represented Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) at the championships, all vying for a spot on their respective MacKillop teams.

The SCS teams came up against the diocese of Canberra/Goulburn, Parramatta, Wagga Wagga and Wollongong.

The chosen MacKillop teams will advance to NSW Primary School Sports Association (PSSA) carnivals in their respective sports and age groups.

Rugby League

The frosty morning kicked off with the rugby league trials for the 11-years and Opens teams at Southwell Park.

Cobi Ryan-Last, from St Michael’s Catholic Primary School in Daceyville, was a standout on the day, securing her position in the rugby league under 11’s team.

Her skill and speed didn’t go unnoticed by selectors and she will continue along SCS’ representative sports pathway to the NSW PSSA Rugby League Championships in Kiama from 1 June to 3 June.

“I put all my effort in that last game and I’m really happy that I made the side,” Cobi said.

Eight SCS representatives made the MacKillop team, a fantastic achievement by those students and Cobi says they all feel “very supported, as everyone knows each other and they all work well together.”

St Aidan’s Catholic Primary School student, Sydney Israel, heard his name get called out at the end of the day.

“The day went really well and it was fun,” Sydney said.

Playing out of position for most of the day, Sydney was one of six SCS players to be selected to the team.

Alumna Kiera Austin courting international success

Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) alumna Kiera Austin is soaring to lofty heights after coming through the system’s representative sports pathway program.

Former Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School North Ryde student, Kiera Austin, last month made her international debut at the 2021 Constellation Cup test series in New Zealand.

Austin, 23, who plays for the Giants in the Suncorp Super Netball competition, credits SCS with helping forge a successful career in sport.

“The (school representative sports) pathway was my first real taste of competitive netball,” Austin said. 

“I didn’t quite know what I was trialling for, but as I kept getting to the next level I knew what I wanted to be doing.”

Austin made four appearances for the Diamonds Australian netball team in NZ in March. The cup was won by NZ, who defeated Australia by three games to one.

“It was my first chance to play for the Diamonds on the Constellation Cup Tour and it was a dream come true,” she said.

“I never thought in a million years I’d get there after starting on the Sydney Catholic Schools pathway”

“I’d like to cement my spot as goal attack, but for now it’s going back into preseason and hitting it hard with the Giants,” said Austin.

The Super Netball star also credits her rise to local netball club, North Ryde Spirits, which was started by parents from the school and which has had teachers like Caroline Loneragan involved for over 20 years.

“I love coming back to the Spirits and the school, as I’m still local and it’s where I started,” Austin said.

“Whenever they have coaching seminars or events I’ll come and say ‘hi’.”

GALLERY: Life is better with goals

It was all systems go at Netball Central in Sydney Olympic Park as 60 primary students from six Sydney Archdiocesan zones competed to represent Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) at the netball MacKillop Trials.

Many goals and skills were on show to selectors and parents on Monday 15 March, as well as a group of Year 9 volunteer students from Domremy Catholic College who helped umpire the games.

One of those umpires, Emily Fernandez, said she was super impressed with the talent on show and pleased she and her peers got to referee this important event.

Convenor for the Sydney Archdiocesan Netball Selection Trials, Caroline Loneragan, described it as “a good day.”

“We’ve been learning things as we go,” said Loneragan. “The process was very good with neutral selectors and makes sure we have the best outcome for all the girls.”

Selectors, who are independent and neutral, had the tough job of selecting 10 talented players to continue their representative pathway journey.

Fittingly, Suncorp Super Netball powerhouses Sydney Giants and NSW Swifts were both training on adjacent courts preparing for their upcoming season.

One of those players was none other than SCS alumna and current Australian Diamonds’ goal attack, Kiera Austin, who was kind enough to come over and chat with some of SCS’ students. The national netball representative also took a few cheeky selfies, much to her young fans’ delight.

Convenor Loneragan taught the netball superstar at Holy Spirit Catholic Primary North Ryde and credits the representative pathway offered at SCS for helping set her, and other elite sport stars like her, on their future road to success.
