From schoolyard to the world stage: SCS students don the green and gold

Three Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) students have proudly represented Australia on the international stage as members of the Subway Joeys U16 national football team.

Corey Da Cruz (De La Salle College Revesby Heights), Georgio Hassarati (Marist College Eastwood) and Aston Reid (St Patrick’s College Sutherland) earned selection for the Joeys squad, competing at the Chinese Football Association (CFA) U16 International Tournament in Hohhot, China, from 28 May to 2 June 2025.

Australia finished runners-up to the host nation, with the tournament featuring elite youth teams from China, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam. After opening the competition with a 2–1 win against both Vietnam and Saudi Arabia, the Subway Joeys were defeated 5–2 by China in a high-intensity final fixture in front of 17,000 fans.

From lunchtime games to international pitches

For Corey Da Cruz, the moment he found out he’d been selected was one of excitement, disbelief, and a quick phone call home.

“I was very happy, excited and extremely grateful. I always hoped to represent my country and to perform on the big stage,” he said.

Corey’s highlight? Scoring for his country. “I always dreamed of it. As soon as I came off the pitch I called my parents. I couldn’t wait to tell them.”

Georgio Hassarati said his school community played a key role in helping him grow in confidence and develop a high-performance mindset.

“My school has given me countless opportunities to prepare me for endeavours like this – both in terms of skill and mindset,” he said.

Sydney Catholic Schools and Western Sydney Wanderers FC launch new football partnership

Sydney Catholic Schools and Western Sydney Wanderers FC have launched a new partnership set to increase and support football participation in Western Sydney.

Together with Sydney Catholic Schools, the Wanderers will be running several grassroots programs and tournaments as well as courses to help increase students’ physical and emotional wellbeing.

This includes Coaching Courses for teachers, focusing on the fundamentals of the game, management of players and coaching players of all abilities. Team Building Programs for staff and senior-aged students will take the learnings from football and combine it with a fun and interactive session focused on building strong relationships around trust, communication and problem solving.

The Wanderers will also be rolling out an After School Pre-Academy Development Program designed to advance the skills of football players across Western Sydney schools under the guidance of leading Wanderers Academy coaches.

Western Sydney Wanderers CEO Scott Hudson said he was proud to create a new pathway for students and support teachers.

“We are delighted to be able to partner with Sydney Catholic Schools to provide a product and pathway for students and teachers to enjoy and learn to play football,” said Mr Hudson.

Sydney Catholic Schools and Sydney FC Establish Partnership

Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) and Sydney Football Club (Sydney FC) are excited to announce a groundbreaking partnership aimed at fostering the development of young football talents and enhancing educational opportunities for students within the SCS system.

The partnership will see SCS and Sydney FC collaborate on a variety of initiatives aimed at supporting the growth and education of school-age football players. 

Through the partnership, the two organisations will work together to identify and nurture talented young footballers within the SCS system, providing specialised development programs that focus on enhancing skills and potential.

SCS will work closely with Sydney FC to introduce football-related educational programs that align with the curriculum, offering students valuable insights into the sport’s technical, tactical, and strategic aspects. 

SCS students will have unique opportunities to learn from professional football coaching staff through mentorship programs, helping students gain insights into the world of football and develop critical life skills.

The partnership will also see the introduction of a dedicated Sydney FC/SCS Game Development Officer whose sole objective will be to encourage students to be involved in football. Jamie Dib, an alumnus of Trinity Catholic College Auburn, has been appointed to the role. 

The partnership reflects SCS and Sydney FC’s commitment to both academic excellence and sports development, creating a holistic learning experience for students, teachers, and families.

2022 Winter Season Championships Results

Sydney Catholic Schools’ inaugural Winter Season Championships came to an exciting close today with winners crowned in football and netball. 

Twelve secondary schools from across the Archdiocese of Sydney competed in Sydney Catholic Schools’ first ever Football Championships and Netball Championships.  

Damien Kerr, Manager: Sport Pre to Post at Sydney Catholic Schools, said the day was a celebration of both students’ abilities and the hard work of teachers and support staff.

On what was a glorious winter’s day, the crowd was treated to a smorgasbord of footballing talent across six games at Edensor Park’s Sydney United Sports Centre. 

St Ursula’s College Kingsgrove triumphed in the Senior Girls, with Holy Cross College Ryde taking out the Senior Boys title. 

Marist Sisters College Woolwich claimed the trophy in the Junior Girls and Christian Brothers’ High School Lewisham were victorious in the Intermediate Boys. 

Marist Catholic College Penshurst were the big winners on the day, coming out on top in both the Junior Boys and Intermediate Girls.
