Sophia Program gives new shape to learning

A world-first professional development and action-research program at Sydney Catholic Schools is taking teachers’ skills and students’ academic work in flexible learning environments to new heights.

The Sophia Program was established by Sydney Catholic Schools in collaboration with the University of Melbourne. It supports principals and teachers in the 147-strong network of schools to use space effectively as a teaching tool.

“It is common for teachers to move into a newly built space and then have to work out how to operate in it,” said School Design Specialist at Sydney Catholic Schools, Vivienne Awad.

“This presents a huge challenge for teachers as their voice may have been absent in the design process. In this project we are advocating, before we commit to a major build, let’s see that we are utilising spaces well and getting the teaching practice right.”

The program also investigates the impact of learning environments on teachers and students, with a report on the impact of flexible learning spaces on student wellbeing to be released this year.

“To have university researchers collaborating with us to gather data and give it back to us in a form that is user-friendly is fantastic,” Ms Awad said.

“The data allows our system to learn about the factors that schools need for success in these spaces and to make better decisions about the future design of our schools.”

Howzat?: New cricket facilities unveiled

Students at Patrician Brothers’ College Fairfield can further hone their cricket skills thanks to eight newly refurbished batting nets.

The cricket facility was officially opened on Friday, February 18, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Tony Farley, Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools, and Fairfield state MP, Guy Zangari.

The upgrade was made possible through two rounds of funding from the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership program.

Located alongside the College’s green fields and basketball courts, the cricket nets will be a major boost to the College’s students, who will enjoy regular use of the facility during PDHPE lessons and cricket training.

Peter Wade, Principal at Patrician Brothers’ College Fairfield, said the new facility was the culmination of plenty of hard work from a collection of key people. 

“I would like to thank Tony Farley and Sydney Catholic Schools for their contribution to the project, as well as Guy Zangari for his ongoing support of the College,” Mr Wade said.

“A special mention also to Kerry Logue, the College’s Business Manager, and Craig Wasson, who is responsible for the College’s grounds and maintenance, for their assistance in bringing the facility to life.”

Mr Wade said the students at the College are now eyeing off what promises to be an exciting year of cricket.

The changing face of science education

Featuring a Biology superlab, balcony rainforest and woodlands ecosystems, St Patrick’s College Sutherland’s new Alpha Crucis building is a game-changer for the sciences and applied studies.

The innovative building design is the result of a collaboration between St Pat’s teachers, school leadership, Sydney Catholic Schools and JDH Architects.

The building design also includes three industry-standard kitchens for Hospitality and Food Technology, two floors of contemporary learning spaces with breakout areas, multipurpose areas and a textiles room. 

Electric vehicle chargers are among the markers of the facilities’ sustainability credentials.

But it is the flexibility of the spaces that has teachers excited to hold classes in the building in  the upcoming school year.

Hospitality students will benefit from commercial-grade cooking facilities. The Hospitality Room’s commercial kitchen fit out includes a full cooking line with combi ovens, bratt pans, deep fryers and a commercial coffee machine. The space will be utilised by students obtaining a Certificate II in Kitchen Operations.

FLEXIBLE LEARNING SPACES

From 2022, Year 11 and 12 students at the college – across Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental, Physics, and Science Extension – will have use of six purpose-built science labs. These areas will also be accessible to more than 900 Year 7 to 10 students.

The Physics lab has movable desks to allow space for practical lessons using ramps, trolleys and data loggers to understand gravity and motion. The Earth and Environmental Science lab has a university lecture …
