Sydney Catholic Schools is expanding its local, faith-based diverse learning opportunities with the establishment of Specialist Support Classes at its schools in Lakemba.

From 2026, St Therese’s Catholic Primary School and Holy Spirit Catholic College will each welcome cohorts of students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities and complex needs into each school.

Together, the two schools will provide students and their families in the Lakemba area and surrounds with a continuity of learning and care for students from Years 2 – 12.

Holy Spirit Catholic College Principal, Kevin Griffiths, said the school community is excited to welcome new families and students next year.

“Having Specialist Support Classes strengthens our mission to be a school where our students are celebrated,” he said.

“The establishment of these classes will benefit all learners, and we’re eager to foster a richer, more inclusive and compassionate school environment for all.”

The Lakemba classes will follow the successful model already implemented at Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School Hoxton Park and Good Samaritan Catholic College Hinchinbrook.

Since their establishment, more than 30 students have been enrolled across the two sites, with the first Year 12 student set to graduate from Good Samaritan Catholic College in 2026.

Janet Toma, a parent at Good Samaritan, said the Specialist Support Class has had a positive impact on her daughter’s life at school and beyond.

“Her self-esteem and overall confidence have significantly improved, and it’s evident that she is thriving both academically and emotionally,” she said.

“The tailored approach to education and the individualised attention she receives have been instrumental in her positive learning gains, making us as parents extremely satisfied with her educational journey.”

Sydney Catholic Schools’ Specialist Support Classes provide personalised, evidence-based support for students with complex learning, communication, and wellbeing needs.

Led by skilled educators and allied health professionals, students learn in a supportive environment while fully participating in school and parish life with their peers. A thorough enrolment and placement process ensures individual support for each student.

The new classes in Lakemba are part of a wider plan to expand the provision of Specialist Support Classes across Sydney Catholic Schools.
