For more than five decades, Villa Maria Catholic Primary School Hunters Hill has been at the heart of Marea De Angelis’ life.

This World Teachers’ Day, Sydney Catholic Schools celebrates and honours her extraordinary journey – a lifetime devoted to teaching, community, and faith.

From her first days as a student, to returning as a parent, teacher and now Family Educator, Marea’s story is woven through the very fabric of Villa Maria. 

“Villa Maria is truly the anchor of my life,” she says.

“It’s not just a school, it’s the very heart of our parish family here in Hunters Hill. Having been connected in so many ways, I’ve witnessed generations grow up in its embrace.”

Her connection to God and family runs through every part of her life. Marea and her husband David were married just down the road at Holy Name of Mary Church, where she also received her sacraments. 

Their four children later grew up in the same community, and her parents’ devotion to Catholic values inspired her lifelong dedication to giving back.

“What makes Villa Maria so special is its enduring continuity of spirit, its Marist Charism, and the faith, work, and parish ethos handed down over decades,” she said.

Marea’s impact extends far beyond the classroom. Her work as a Family Educator has helped strengthen the bond between school, parish, and home, bringing Gospel values to life through compassion, service, and inclusion.

“My faith doesn’t just inform my work, it fundamentally drives it,” she explained. “As a teacher and Family Educator, my role is a vocation, an extension of my devotion that calls me to instill Gospel values, not just teach a curriculum.”
