From graphic design to coding, from food technology to textiles – it’s all in a day’s work for Technological and applied studies (TAS) teachers like Cathal Derivan. 

Having grown up with a love of woodworking, Mr Derivan has expanded his horizons in more ways than once since moving to Sydney from his native Ireland in December 2022. 

Fast forward almost two years and Mr Derivan has now become a valued member of staff at Holy Spirit Catholic College Lakemba, where he’s enjoying the variety that comes with being a TAS teacher at Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS).  

Mr Derivan is also one of a number of international teachers who have benefited from SCS’ Teacher Sponsorship Program, which helps connect eligible and passionate teachers with one of SCS’ 147 primary and secondary schools.

As an approved Standard Business Sponsor, SCS is able to sponsor teachers who are on visas under the government’s subclass 482 Temporary Work (Skilled) visa program and to lodge nominations and visa applications on behalf of schools.

After first arriving in Australia, Mr Derivan taught casually in another school for a couple of weeks before finding a home at Holy Spirit. 

“The support from the staff, the executive and all the management has been second to none. I’ve received a lot of support and really made me feel welcome,” Mr Derivan said. 

“At Holy Spirit, as a staff we’re looked after extremely well and it’s something I’m very appreciative of.” 

Having taught woodwork in Ireland for five years, Mr Derivan said the opportunity to now teach TAS, one of the fastest-growing and most innovative subject areas, is something he is relishing.   

“My speciality is in woodwork, it’s an interest that comes from my family,” he said.
