Holy Cross Catholic Primary School Woollahra is gaining recognition as a local community school that punches above its weight when it comes to getting results.
The school recently ranked in the Top 100 Sydney Primary Schools, securing 61st place in the Better Education rankings for its outstanding NAPLAN results.
Now, under the leadership of Kylie Brakel, a seasoned educator returning to Holy Cross as Principal, the school is poised to enter a new chapter of growth and opportunity.
Kylie brings a wealth of experience, having held various leadership roles across Sydney Catholic Schools – including Assistant Principal at St Bernard’s Botany and St Therese Mascot, and Principal at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Oatley – before returning to Holy Cross at the start of this year.
Having always seen education as a calling, Kylie’s journey at Holy Cross began in 1994, and returning to the first school she taught at feels like coming home.
“It was a lovely place to grow as a teacher, and it ignited my passion for teaching. I knew I had made the right career choice by being part of a Catholic community,” she shares.
“I’ve had a passion for working with children since I was a child myself,” Kylie reflects.
“In fact, when I was in Year 12 and choosing my university path, there was no doubt – I knew I wanted to be a primary school teacher.”
As principal, Kylie is focused on bringing a fresh vision to Holy Cross Woollahra, one that builds on its tradition of academic excellence while broadening the student experience.
“We want to ensure that the academic curriculum is always at the forefront, but also that children have opportunities to explore and develop their gifts beyond the classroom,” she explains.
“It’s about providing a well-rounded education so that children can truly enjoy their time at school, and thrive in every area of their development.”
The school has recently undergone a significant transformation, with upgrades to both its play areas and learning spaces.
These improvements have created a more engaging and dynamic environment where students can thrive academically and socially.
“We have a spacious playground that gives children room to explore, play and connect,” Kylie says. “It’s all part of creating a school where students feel excited to come and learn every day.”
In addition to these physical upgrades, Holy Cross is introducing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives to help students develop critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills.
“STEM education really engages children and helps them develop as thinkers and problem-solvers,” Kylie explains. “We’re excited to see our students take ownership of their learning and even become experts in the field.”
For families in Woollahra and Bondi Junction in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, Holy Cross offers more than just a top-tier Catholic education. It’s a place where children are supported to grow within a tight-knit community.
“We focus on the whole child,” she says. “Academics are extremely important; however, we also place a strong emphasis on nurturing their wellbeing, helping them develop strong values, and preparing them for the future.”
As a local herself, Kylie sees firsthand why Holy Cross is such a great option for parents in the area. “It’s a wonderful community, and that’s what makes it so special,” she says.
“We’re not just focused on educating children, but on creating an environment where families and staff are learners as well. Parents are truly part of the educational process.”
