In the lead up to the Month of Mary, St Mary’s Catholic Primary School Georges Hall has unveiled a beautiful mural of Jesus’ mother.

Principal Monica Palmer commissioned and helped design the artwork by Sydney artist Danny Mulyono as a parting gift from their Year 6 students.

“We wanted a beautiful image of Mary in our playground,” Ms Palmer said with reference to the school’s namesake.

“While the artist was here for a week, the students were enthralled with the process,” Ms Palmer said.  “They were asking lots of questions and sketching while the artist was.”

The Month of Mary

The Marian Month of May is a month-long devotion to Mary.

Common ways of celebrating Mary include crowning her image with flowers, to honour and love Mary as the Queen of Heaven and Earth, and creating a May Altar as a reminder of Mary’s love for us and her importance in our lives.

The altar can feature a statue or picture of Mary decorated with candles and “Mary’s flowers”, e.g. cornflowers (also referred to as Mary’s Crown), lily-of-the-valley (Our Lady’s Tears) and irises (Mary as Queen).
