Introducing the contemporary dance winners of our first ever Sydney Catholic Schools’ Lockdown Arts Festival.

Early Primary (K-2)

Title: Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Self-choreographed solo dance by Evie showing the joy and happiness of being able to come out of lockdown and see her friends again.

School: Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Primary School, NORTH STRATHFIELD
Title: Lonely
I have a passion for dance and this was the perfect way to represent my feelings during the 2021 lockdown. I am 10 years old and have been dancing for 6 years. I choreographed this piece by myself and I wanted my movements to show others the loneliness, anger, frustration and sadness I felt during this time.

School: All Hallows Catholic Primary School, FIVE DOCK
Title: Rising together with Light, Hope & Love, out of Lockdown.

School: St Michael’s Catholic Primary School, MEADOWBANK
Title: Bruises
Lewis Shilvock- learnt during lockdown via zoom. Was so difficult to learn online but was so happy to be able to create while in lockdown.

Lower Secondary (7-9)

School: Our Lady of Mercy College, CRONULLA
Title: Castle
The dance is a lyrical/contemporary dance with acro, movement and flexibility. The dance was done out the front on my a balcony and was an improvisation peace I had been practicing for a while. The song is by Halsey.

Title: Wonderful World
This dance was Choreographed By Maddie Peat- studio director of Compeat Dance. Music is What a Wonderful World by Ruben and The Dark & AG.

School: Marist Sisters College, WOOLWICH
Title: Isabella Allsopp Angels Dance Film
This composition was made for an assessment task where we had to create a dance based on something in our house which I chose the red angel in my house. I was required to use motifs which were circular pathways to represent the halo and slicing movements to represent the metal the angel is made out of.

Primary Class

School: St Mary’s Catholic Primary School ERSKINEVILLE
Title: Adventure
This dance was choregraphed by a dance teacher from Dream Street Dance. The students in the dance are from Year 3, 5 and 6. They learnt the dance through an instructional video and zoom lesson. The dance is themed ‘Adventure’ as the dancers all dreamt about their next adventure while they were in lockdown.

Title: Everyone’s Waiting
We have a small mixed group from Yr 4 – 6 who helped put this together during the school holidays. We normally rehearse every week and can not wait to resume dancing at school!

School: Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School CARNES HILL
Title: We’re Back!
Inspired by the come back of 90s band Backstreet Boys, I gave the students some choreography to use as their starting point as to how they felt about a life after lockdown. It is aimed to pump up our school community and ease the transition from isolation and remote learning, to collaboration and being back together.

School: St Mary’s Cathedral College SYDNEY
Title: Capoeira & Acrobatics
Our family has been keeping active this lockdown. We miss training and grateful we can still do this at home. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial arts that blends acrobatics, music, fight and Dance. We love sharing our Brazilian culture, hope more people can see this beautiful art. Antonio is in St Marys Yr8 and Romeo (yr5), Cristiano (yr3) Cristiana (yr1) are at OLMC. Ages 6 to 13 yrs old, all our levels are different, and we have some cool tricks to show you, in the space we have at home. Hope you enjoy it!

School: St Finbar’s School SANS SOUCI
Title: Dancing to Freedom
The dance was created by Valentina (9yrs) and Giulianna (7yrs), all choreography and the song selection was also done by them. The dance has elements of acrobatics, hip hop and jazz. The girls created a fun, light dance as they looked forward to lockdown ending. It is a tribute to looking out from and forward to end of lockdown.
