Indigenous Australians receive the right to vote

The Commonwealth Electoral Act 1962 received assent on 21 May 1962. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had the option to enrol and vote in federal elections. The enrolment was not compulsory but once enrolled it was compulsory to vote.
