Isabella making waves

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School Earlwood student Isabella Esposito has been awarded a sports medallion at the 2021 Primary Sports Awards.

Isabella received the medallion for her selection into the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association (NSWPSSA) Sate Merit Team for swimming.

The sport medallion is awarded to Sydney Catholic School students who have represented MacKillop on three or more occasions and/or were selected into a NSWPSSA State Merit Team during the school year.

Isabella was one of seven students to receive a medallion during a virtual ceremony, held in December 2021.

In case you missed it, you can watch – or re-watch – Isabella receiving her medallion by clicking on the live link below.

A natural leader whose sporting prowess is admired by her peers, Isabella said swimming gives her self-confidence and helps her realise her potential.

“One of the best things about swimming for me is the opportunity to push yourself and be proud of what you can accomplish,” Isabella said.

“When I heard I was receiving a sports medallion I was surprised at first, but then happy that I was able to achieve something like that” – Isabella Esposito

Isabella Esposito Isabella has had a very successful year in the pool.

Having picked up a slew of medals in the past 12 months and representing her school at the state championships, Isabella said she’s hoping to one day emulate her idol Bronte Campbell.

“One of my sporting idols is Bronte Campbell ‘cause I’ve been looking up to her and watching her at the Olympics since I was little,” she said.

“A goal of mine is to make it to the Olympics but also to prove …

Following St Joseph’s example

A powerful prayer life throughout 2020 led Berala parishioner Ivica Kovac to a unique new role as a Sydney Catholic primary schools’ Family Educator.

“Encouraged by two priests, I was praying to St Joseph; I wanted to do something more,” Mr Kovac, who comes from an equipment rental business background, said.

Ironically, this was before Pope Francis had announced a Year of St Joseph (8 December 2020 to 8 December 2021) in honour of the 150th anniversary of Saint Joseph being named as patron of the Universal Church.

“St Joseph, such a humble, wise, loving man and a most powerful intercessor,” Mr Kovac said.

“He is the most wonderful role model for all boys and men of all ages with all his titles – my favourites are ‘Terror of Demons’ and ‘Patron of a Holy Death’ – and is so relevant and needed now in 2021.

“If we look at who was at his side when he died on earth, it was Jesus and Our Lady, Mary; just wow!”

“Family Educators of the future must be courageous to share the truth in love always, because only this can truly set us free. Love and truth are one, inseparable!”

As part of his new role as a Family Educator at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School Earlwood Mr Kovac will help connect families with the religious life of their school and Parish communities.

Asked how he hoped to do this, he said: “Being the Year of St Joseph, I hope to offer the community the wonderful opportunity to complete a 33-day consecration to St Joseph.”

“With each Wednesday being dedicated to St Joseph I hope and pray that we can …

Patches of love for Vinnies

Students at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School Earlwood are making a virtual blanket of love for the 2020 Vinnies Winter Appeal.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic St Vincent de Paul Society is encouraging cash donations this winter, instead of warm blankets and clothing.

The funds raised will go towards supporting families facing an uncertain future during the coronavirus.

“Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School community is always extremely generous” – Judith Kennedy

To do their part to help, our Lady of Lourdes’ families are purchasing paper quilt patches for $10 each to make up the pieces of a virtual blanket of love for the Vinnies Winter Appeal.

Each square contains the family name and an inspirational message, word or Bible quote.

“The Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School community is always extremely generous and has proven so again this year,” the school’s Family Educator, Judith Kennedy, said.

So far the school has raised just over $1400 – and there are still squares coming in from families to be added to the blanket.

“I feel very blessed in my role here at Earlwood,” Ms Kennedy said.
