Laughter, conversation and shared stories filled Holy Innocents’ Catholic Primary School, Croydon, as children, parents, grandparents and residents from Bupa Aged Care, Ashfield came together for a special intergenerational celebration marking the upcoming Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne.
Families from the school’s playgroup joined the aged care residents for a morning of craft activities, games and shared story time, creating meaningful opportunities for friendship, connection and joy across generations.
More than just a morning of fun, the event celebrated the important role grandparents and older generations play in nurturing faith, wisdom and community. It also coincided with this year’s World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, themed “I will never forget you” (Isaiah 49:15), a reminder of God’s enduring love and the value of every person.
Family Educator Cindy Miu said the celebration was inspired by a desire to strengthen intergenerational relationships while honouring the dignity of older members of the community.
“Bringing together our playgroup families, grandparents and Bupa residents is a beautiful way to strengthen the bonds between generations,” she said.
“We hope everyone leaves with a deeper appreciation of the important role older people play in our families, our communities and the life of the Church, knowing they are remembered, valued and loved.”
The gathering reflected the heart of Catholic education, where faith is lived through relationships, compassion and service. For young children, it was an opportunity to build empathy, develop respect for older generations and experience the joy of connecting with others. For Bupa residents, the morning offered companionship, conversation and the energy that young children bring.
“When generations come together, faith, love and community grow stronger. These moments help children develop empathy, respect for older people and an understanding that even small acts of kindness can make someone feel seen, valued and connected,” Mrs Cindy Miu said.
As stories were shared and friendships formed, the celebration served as a powerful reminder that Catholic education extends beyond the classroom, strengthening connections between families and the wider community through faith, kindness and shared experiences.
