Cardinal George Pell was born in Ballarat, on 8 June 1941. He was ordained a Catholic priest for the Diocese of Ballarat by Cardinal Agagianian in St Peter’s Basilica, Rome, on 16 December 1966. On 26 March 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed Cardinal Pell the eighth Metropolitan Archbishop of Sydney. He was installed as Archbishop at St Mary’s Cathedral on 10 May 2001.
